    Louder Exhaust.

Hi all, does anyone know of an exhaust system that liberates a little more of that V8 sound that we all know and love. I've asked Tony Hart about the big bore system but he says it is purely cosmetic and is the same diameter inside as the small bore one.

    Mike,

I obviously bow to Tony Hart's experience, but I have an auto with stainless steel system and large bore tailpipes and it is definitely a different sound to a couple of my friends stags. They both have manuals and small bore tailpipes, although one is stainless and one is a mild steel. It could well be the auto has a different sound but I've no idea why. All 3 cars are original Triumph V8 so no difference there.

Could always just be that 1970's Triumph tolerance that we all laugh about.

I'm looking at a set of stainless 4 branch manifolds at present from a company I have found that manufacture themelves and I believe that this does make a difference, but I'll just have to wait and see on that one.

      Tim,

what price have you been quoted for the 4 branch tubular manifolds, i have been trying to find a company that manufactures themselves rather than go via the usual route and pay a middle man supplier his mark up.

Mike, I replaced my system with a Stainless system from 'Robsport' a couple of years back, Standard not a 'Big bore' system.

I have been disappointed that the system is too loud. I thought it would get quieter with a coat of carbon inside but 5000 miles on its still as noisey and there are no leaks anywhere!

Whilst everyone like the 'growl' of the V8 it becomes very tiresome, and spoils the experience,if on fast long runs the noise level is too loud.

PS I'm not overly sensitive to the noise, we are talking v. loud here. Small child cheer, Dogs jump into their owners arms and cats run up lampposts as I pass!

I have got to say that I prefer the quieter sound. I had always thought the stainless systems were the noisier ones and the mild steel ones the quieter. One of my Stags is manual with a small bore tailpipe, the other is automatic with a large bore, they both have stainless exhausts and both sound exactly the same to me.

Mike if your system is stainless and in good nick fancy a swop? As explained my system is louder than I wish it to be, still as new.

Also there is no guarentee thatRobsport still sell the same system or, if they do,it will sound the same.

My exhaust sounds great (at least in my opinion) and is definately louder than normal, as you can see in the pic. the pipes exit on each side.

It is a stainless system and was custom made by the owner before last. ( so I was told by the guy I bought it from) The address on the log book is

Cardiff exhausts Ltd (Mal Elwood), Unit 7 Denvale Trade Park, Ocean Way, Cardiff CF24 5PF.

I don't find the noise tiresome although it can be a bit boomy climbing steep hills at around 30 mph on part throttle!

I have standard manifolds butI may fit tubular ones at some time, we shall see if that makes any difference.

The company that manufactures the latest design mandrel bent tubular manifolds is Phoenix performance exhausts. They had a stand at the nec several years ago and I picked up a price list.

Phoenix Performance Exhausts Ltd, Unit D2-3, Kingsmill Industrial Estate, Cullompton, Devon, EX15 1BS, UK.

They sent them out to me direct in 2003 as they had been out of stock everywhere for a while and all the suppliers were waiting for a new batch to be made.

I've 1.5 Stags (been rebuilding #1 for 10 years.....), both autos, one with stainless, the other mild steel. When changing engines on Stag #2 I replaced m/s with stainless and noticed no difference at all. What I do prefer tho is the size of the tailpipe, the large ones I feel look far better and err umm manly than the small bore pipes. That said, having just replaced the auto box with manual and refitted stainless, its noticeably quieter at speed (less revs I guess), so personally I don't have a problem with stainless or the big bore pipe.

The problem with the phoenix manifolds that everyone sells these days is that they are not symetrical. The quality looks good, and they are easy to fit without moving the alternator...hence why they are not symetrical.

My manifolds are over 15 years old and are of the older 'better' design, being symetrical with both exits running forward then back under the car, perfectly balanced gas flow from both heads. Unfortunately they are mild steel & therefore rusting slowlyOkay I had to move the alternator to the nearside wing, but this is an improvement, it stays clean and is easy to service.

I hope to find one day a supplier offering one of the same design but in stainless steel, but phoenix appear to have the market to themselves. I guess I should really give them call to see if they can also supply a proper set!

                        Cheers,

                        Mike.
