    Wire Wheels

    Hi all

Im thinking of getting some chrome wire wheels for the stag, ive seen a few recently with them fitted and now fancy getting a set.

Is there any specific type to avoid?

Is there any downside to fitting themobviously polishing is a pain but will I be plagued with punctures etc

    Any advice greatly received.

    Hi Mark

I had wire wheels (genuine factory) on my first stag, I used to have the problem of the knock on nut coming loose on the OSR wheel. The other thing that you have to watch for is the wheel being buckled due to either loose spooks or it being curbed.

They look ace especially the chrome ones but are an absolute pain to keep clean.

Make sure if you do get the kit you get the correct nuts that hold the wheel carrier on as they arethinner and chamfered so they don't foul the wheel.

mark be aware that when fitting- wheel studs for wires are slightly shorter than std studs so they dont foul originals can be shortened but i purchased a set many moons back when i fitted wires just because i geussed they may have stretched over the years. i ditched after 30k because of worn splines and hubs and continualy needing to tighten spokes and cleaning nightmare.must admit they look the dogs but you pay:shock:dont let me put you off im sure lots of good stories out there .........steve.

        Hi Mark

I have a set of five aftermarketchromed wires on normal tubeless radials. They are bolt on, a direct replacement for the normal wheel. They were on the car when I bought it five years ago and I have not had any problems. They are easy to keep clean for normal use but a pain to polish for show. However the effort is well worth it. The only drawback is that they are extremely heavy by comparison with an alloy or steel wheel of similar size, as I found out one very wet night. Oh and they seem to be on the expensive side!

I don't know where mine came from but when I lost an end cap I eventually found these people who didn't just take my internet order but rang me to check dimensions etc. You will see the options they offer if you scroll down.

Thanks everyone for your help, much appreciated.

Going to look on the net for best deals, knowing my luck I will spend a fortune on wheels and something will go wrong with the car.

Sorry for dragging this out a bit but I notice Wards and TR shop are selling a set for £825 and Rimmers are about a grand.

Is there any particular type I should avoid or go for?

Does the different amount of spokes make much difference?

When it comes to buying is there any other car that would use the same size wire wheel as a stag?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

I was a bit wary of mine when I bought the car but now I am now sold on them they do take a bit of cleaning and their is a special brush which is worth its weight in gold see picture.

The only problem I have found with them is when fitting new tyres I could only find one garage in the whole of Nottingham that could balance them.

Mine came from this company http://www.mwsint.com/Index.asp

Mark, the £825 kit in Wards is my type of bolt on replacement for four wheels . Their kit with centre hub and spinners is £900 for five. I dont know whether this includes VAT but the Rimmer price is £995+ VAT.
