There is a real delay from when these articles are written and when you read them but despite that, I hope that you are spotting a recurrent theme about what a fun place the SOC Forum is. This month is no exception and the challenge is where to start…
Like many of the area reports, on the forum there are certain subjects that come up time and time again. The difference is when these subjects are raised out on the internet, they spark instant and mass responses! In the past few weeks, we have had two lively debates about forum access rights and what sort of V8 to keep under the bonnet.
It is good to explain what happened with a new regular on the forum called Don. He already owned a classic and was looking to change marque. Don managed to join the forum despite not having a stag or being a member of the SOC and soon started asking all sorts of questions about the car, what to look for, parts availability etc.
Over the course of a month, he joined in the debate, benefited from the incredible real-time knowledge base and expertise that is available 7days a week. The up-shot of him doing this is that Don ended up buying one of the forum members cars and joined the SOC.
The majority opinion was that, as proved by Don’s example, everyone benefited from open access, which can only be a good thing as the club looks to maintain and expand membership.
On the subject of V8’s the amount of modified cars amongst forum members is a lot higher than you would expect and the merits of Rover and Triumph V8’s as the best way of powering the stag could fill pages and pages but its all far to technical for me. At the more extreme end of modifications and as a way to more power from the Triumph V8, there are a couple of supercharger projects underway that are regularly reported on. You might also be interested to know that one, by Tony Hart, is being planned as a commercially available kit (start saving now?)
Another supercharger project has been created by the forum member known only as Snnnakkkkeyyy. He is known as a really good engineer and surprised us again in a different way by a sudden change of Avatar. (For those of you that don’t know, an Avatar is the picture that you choose to attach to your forum profile) Mostly, these are pictures of peoples cars but there are some exceptions – IanB uses a certain Australian female pop star but Snnnakkkkeyyy really upped the ante with an animated picture, the vision of which is still with me today.
Like most good ideas, this was rapidly copied to the point that one member had to stop logging on at work until he could move his screen away from the view of the company meeting room. This is all over now but the picture in is probably hidden away somewhere if you look hard enough...
In the interests of fairness to our lady posters, one of the more extrovert members, well known for his Java Car and kingpin like knowledge, has threatened to model his latest Stag T-shirt for his own animated picture. Watch this space.
This week we also recorded our highest ever number of concurrent people on the forum at the same time – 43 people. These people can be from anywhere in the world and with total members now around the 700 mark plus around 20% more guests than members, we are creating a very likely and popular part of the internet – well done and thank you to Carl for setting this up and keeping it all running.
If my selected articles are not to your taste (though I do recommend that Avatar!!!) then there are plenty of more traditional subjects to keep your interest up. To give you an idea of what you are missing out on, 8 months ago, this part of the article was selected from the months topics. Recently this was down to the last week’s posts and this month’s summary is based on yesterday’s posts and includes:
We hope these articles tempt you to have a look and join in. If you don’t already know how, you can access the forum via the SOC web site at http://www.stag.org.uk/index.aspx or if you get stuck, email me at stagforum@anvuk.com and I will help you get on-line.
We hope to see you on the forum soon
