    Rear subframe arms

    Evening all.

Since the inclement weather has been upon us I have been stripping down the rear end on my Stag, to get it ready for the summer.
Being relatively new to Stags I am learning things as I go, and this forum has already proved a great source of info - thanks! However I have come across a problem, and I am in need of some adviceor opinions.

On removal of the rear subframe arms I noticed that the holes in the subframe arms that mount to the differential have become somewhat elongted (1.5 x the original diameter)to the point where the driver's side one wobbled freely even though the bolts were tight. The crush tubes on the inside of the box section also appear to be split.

Firstly is this common problem and what might cause this?

Secondly, the options I see in front of me are:-

1 - replace with 2nd hand parts - potentially unknown condition, and could they fail in the same way soon after fitting?

2 - replace with NEW - costly but is it worth it in the long run?

3 - repair old arms - I found a thread suggesting the holes could be re-formed by adding weld to the area and re-shaping the holes. Is this a recommended repair, and how reliable is this? Or is there another, more robust way of repairing them?

Whatwould yourrecommendations be on how to procede?

After I have made the decision (hopefully with help from this post) is there anything I can do to help stop this happening again?

A forum search threw up a thread where differential nose re-informents (weld in?) were mentionned.

What are these reinforcements, and how/where do they reinforce the diff? Will they help with the issue above? What do they look like so I can check my diff(s) and where can I get some from?

Sorry for all the questions from a relative newcomer, but I would be grateful of any help with this

    Many thanks

    James

      Hi James

I would repair your existing arms. You need to get the holes drilled out to take a steel tube that will go from one side to the other and the tubing must have an internal bore of 1/2 inch. Then both end of the tubes meed to be welded to the arms and the dressed flat so that the bolt heads and washers sit flat. This is the best way and they can never go again and you can have peace of mind

      Good luck

Thank Andrew, I'll investigate the repairing of my own. I don't suppose you know of somewhere is Essex, that is capable of doint this for me? I don't have the means to do it myself!

As the holes are already elongated how would I know where to drill the holes (or at least ask for them to be drilled), in order to get them perfectly aligned to the diff nose holes? Are there any drawings or templates available to help with this?

        Thanks once again

          Hi James

Already knowing about this as a common problem and having just removed mine expecting them to be like it,i found them to be perfect ,so there must be other good second hand ones out there .I would of thought it would be worth giving Martin (Just triumph)or les clark a shout,Both on ebay and both brake stags.

          Cheers Steve

              Hi James

Stuarts offer fora replacement pair is a good one but if you are thinking about doing your own, then I would suggest Gard Engineering in Rayleigh as they have done quite a bit of work for me over the years on all sorts of cars and they love odd jobs and are enthusiastic about classic cars,

Either way, you will have to get the arms off.

If you are not taking up Stuarts offer, them maybe worth going to the Stoneleigh show and buying a pair there. Make sure you don't buy a pair of Triumph 2000 arms. They are the same except only one arm has a hole for the exhaust to go through

              Good luck

Yes but a hole can be easily added

                  Hi Stuart,

Thank you very much for the offer. Considering my options I will investigate having mine repaired first, however if this proves not to be viable, and your offer is still open I willbe back in touch. I will hopefully get back to you this week.

                  Thanks Andrew,

I'd forgotten about Gard. Tony @ Gard has done a number of engine rebuilds for myself and friends, and I would recommend his work to anyone. I'll give him a bell next week.

Thanks all onceagain and watch this space........
