    Rear Subframe Mounting Bolts

Stustag kindly offered to help put my diff and rear suspension back today and all went reasonably well until we came to tighten up the subframe mounting bolts.

Started to tighten them and they seemed to protrude a hell of a way through the locking nut and did not seem to be securing the mounting.

Eventually became so concerned that we took one bolt back out and compared it with the one old bolt I had left (Had to angle grind one off as it had siezed solid through the sleeve in the mounting bush!):?

Reason found......:shock: the new bolt is 30 mm longer on the shank than the original - No way would it have tightened up and secured the mounting. Question is is this the wrong part as it came as a part of a Rear suspension rebuild kit from ANG. I have now e-mailed them and am awaiting a response - hope we can get it sorted as, following his visit to me, Stustag's UJ appears to have gone and he's stripped the trailing arm studs fitting his spare - NOT A GOOD DAY!:X:X:X

Anyone used an ANG kit - did you have a similar problem or have I been sent a duff kit?

I shall watch this thread with great interest as I was planning on purchasing the front and rear bolt sets from ANG when I get to that stage of my rebuild.

I had the same issue with mine, I was going to contact ANG and let them know, but I didn't get around to it. Clearly I should have .

I had just managed to get my subframe back up into position (working outside on my own) and I wasn't about to drop it all down again so I put the old bolts back in. The only re-used bolts on the whole rear end!

Hopefully Glen being a long standing member of the Forum will get this matter dealt with quickly as he has a very good reputation so far and I'm sure he would not want it damaged in anyway. (considering he set up NAG due to getting crap parts from other suppliers!)

As you say Dave it's not good to get it all back up under the car than find a bolt is wrong! Luckily for Ian he has a garage and does not need the car working just yet otherwise I'm sure his compliant would of been on the more seriously P***** Off side!

Dave how did you get on lining the bolt/washer up on your own as there a bit fiddly even with 2 of us?

          Hi Stuart,

I didn't have too much trouble lining the bolts up. I preassembled the diff, rear plate and subframe arms before I lifted it all up, once the diff plate bolts were in the subframe arms were pretty much in the right place. One side went in straight sway, the other needed a bit of a heavy boot to shift it round a bit. Don't tighten anything up until all of the nuts are in place.

When I was lifting it all up I put some 10mm threaded bar through the front subframe mounts. This enabled me to gradually lift up the whole assembly nice and evenly.

          Regards

          Dave

            Stu

I've sent Stagmoneypit a PM as well, I'm more than happy with the rest of the bolt set and I don't want to cause him or their business any aggro!

However it does need sorting and could cause someone with little or no experience a major (and safety related) problem?

Slightly off topic but I was given a scan a few years ago of the Standard Truimph Hardware catalogue. I've found it really useful for cross reference part nos to bolt sizes / lengths etc

It's here if anyone wants a copy:

It's a link straight to the doc, or at least it should be. Just click on it, or paste it into as an address in IE, it should then offer Save or Open. If it doesn't work PM me your email and I'll send it to you.

                        Glen/All

I would like to say the power of the forum but I suspect that Glen/ANG are keen to look after their customers anyway.

Had a call from Glen @ 10.00 am this morning, apologies for error but new supplier and batch of kits have wrong mounting bolt. 2 x new bolts ordered and are on way in 1st class post.

Can't really ask for more - unless Glen would like to come and fit them...

Seriously though - soon sorted - many thanks to all and particularly Stustag who broke his "motor" in the process - sorry Stu!
