    Fuel Tank Drain Plug Size/Thread

Following a question I asked a while ago ref: fitting Bosch fuel Pump for 2.5 P.I. Engine in my Stag I am now on a mission, unsure if it is going to work but ithas promise.

Does anyone know the thread type and size of the drain plug in the fuel tank, reason for asking is I want to connect a feed pipe from this drain plug hole and while I could remove the tank andmeasure then refit the tankit would be nice if I knew the size so I can get what I want made up first.

It would be appreciated if the correct thread size is supplied as if someone "thinks" they know the size it could cause me problems due to getting pipe etc made up only to find it does not fit.

Unsure if it makes a difference, the Stag is a 1972.

As always many thanks for any replies.

    Don Kennedy.

P.S. I will be taking pictures etc while I am doing this so if it works I will show when completed.

    Don

There is no drain plug in the Stag tank. Tip unside down to empty it.

Not sure of the size but apparently it is the same as the sump drain plug, hope this helps.

          Your right Bob ,

The 2 originals i have got don't have a drain plug but the repo tank from rimmers did have one,the trouble is it would have to hang out the hole in thebottom of the boot floor where the big grommet fits, not ideal.

                Hi Guys,

Many thanks for the replies. Looks like the best way is for me to remove the tank and have a look to see if there is one there and measure if there is.

                Many thanks, Don Kennedy

If there is one it will protrude through the boot floor so you will see it from under the car.

Are you going to the N&N in Plympton next month?

Hi Darren, Unlikley I will be there as during the week both day time and eveningsis difficult and Wednesdays even more so. I promise, I am not an anti-social old fart. A question, what does N & N mean ?.

Ref: Drain Plug, due to confusion if there or not I will be fitting an outlet at the bottom of the tank.

                    Many thansk, Don Kennedy

                      'Noggin & Natter', Don.

No idea who first coined the term, but it seems to have been around for years. Last night's was well attended. Bodes well for the new season.

                        Hi Don,

Just realised in the front of the ROM where it gives all the torque settings, it also gives size of thread (I think, I stand to be corrected)

Thepetrol tank drain plug is listed as 5/8th x 18 t.p.i (not sure what tpi means) and a torque figure of 30-38 lbft

Incidentally thisgives a different size to the oil sump drain plug which is shown as 3/8th x 18 dryseal.

                        Hope this helps.

                          Hi Al.

Tpi means turns per inch, ie the thread pitch. Not looked at my ROM but torque of 30-38ft lb seems very high for a screwing a plug into a bush soldered/brazed/welded into a tin can. I would be worried about something shearing.

                          John.

5/8th with 18 TPI is actually a UNF thread.

Drain plugs where only fitted to Mark I Stag fuel tanks from the factory.
