    Towing with ZF Gearbox

    Hi,

Anybody towed a caravan with a Stag fitted with a ZF gearbox?

I have towed with a Stag/BW35 box, albeit carefully, but would be interested in any feedback or experiences of the Stag/ZF combination before I go to the bother of fitting my towbar.

My caravan complies with the 85% rule for towing, i.e. van is 85% the weight of the Stag (with hardtop)

I've towed a well loaded trailer with the ZF and no problems. The ZF was originally fitted to a vehicle with higher BHP and torque than our baby V8 chucks out so I would rest easy. It might struggle a bit in 4th though, so maybe you are better leaving in in '3' unless on the motorway.

However, the fact you want to tow a caravan on public roads concerns me:shock:...... just tell me where you are not going so that I can enjoy the free flow of traffic.......

That would be a 'pre-Indian-Takeaway' Jag then

XJ and takeaway both come in aluminium containers.

Actually I was thinking of touring Surrey and Sussex this summer, some nice narrow roads around there with no overtaking opportunities.

Seriously though, a lot of bile is ladled at caravaners who are by law limited to 60 mph, unlike trucks which are limited to 56 mph. I don't hear critisism of Tesco trucks clogging up the roads. Most of my towing is in fact on motorways where I can cruise past the trucks with minimum disruption. In France, the limit for caravans is the same as for cars.

After all that, looks like I may be OK fitting my tow bar.

On mine it's bolted behind the bumper irons and drill 2 holes in the boot floor for the brace

Mine uses the main rear bumper bolts with another piece of steel that goes forward, under the boot pan and bolts up to the floor. That's where you have to create a hole plus one for the electrics cable.

My Transit is limited to 80 mph downhill but only 55mph going back up
