Steering Rack - Greasing

Can someone tell me the thread used in the Power Steering Rack for fitment of the Grease nipple, the manual seems to say 1/8ā€¯ BSP but I have bought one and it is far to large to fit the thread.



Taking the blanking screw off it looks like a Ā¼ā€¯ UNC but not sure?



Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi Gary,

I just removed mine and put it in my thread gauge. It's showing as 1/4" UNF, not UNC.

I did the same as Ray and can confirm that it's 1/4 UNF (28 TPI).Incidentally I've looked in both the Triumph ROM and the Haynes workshopmanual but can't see any mention of the thread size.

Here's another question. Why does one have to replace the grease nipple with the screw. Why not leave the nipple in place?

Welcome to the forum

Can't answer your query I'm afraid.............I leave mine in cos I can't see any reason to take it out. This morning it was rather handy because having got under the car to help Gary I put the grease gun on and gave it a couple of strokes.

It doesn't take much to keep me happy.......

I think the reason for removing the grease nipple is to avoid the risk of small grit particles being injected into the rack along with the new grease. No doubt careful Stag owners won't do this, but BL mechanics of the day might not have been so scrupulous?
