    Rover V8 and Auto

There seems to be plenty of people doing a Rover V8 conversion with a manual box, but has anyone done an auto conversion?

As the Range Rover gearbox has the transfer housing, the auto box seems unsuitable. The TVR's all have manual boxes and I assume opt for the LT77 or R380.

There was great article regarding an RV8 rebulld in the latest kit car magazine (done by RPI at a cost of £10k !!).

the best lt77 box are numbered prefix 27 or 28 ending in D. (sd1 vitesse)these have larger bearings fitted.

My car was originally an auto, (without TV8 attached) so when my dad fitteda rover engine in mated it up to the original Borg Warner box. It drove very well as I remember. My mum used to love to drive it.

Then in a fit of machismo he ripped out the auto and went manual.....Mum never drove it again, she liked the auto so much.

If I wanted to stay with auto, then it seems the only choice is the ZF HP22 box, anyone know whether there is a RV8 to ZF bellhousing available?

Alternatively, I could convert to manual and go with the T5 gearbox? It seems that the R380 is really notchy and a lot of MG V8 owners are converting to T5

The bell housing on the later Range Rovers will fit straight on as they have a ZF 4-speed auto. To fit the ZFHP22 to the Stag (with RV8) you can either remove the transfer housing and fit a direct coupling to the propshaft or just use a ZFHP22 from another car (BMW or Jag).

If you want to fit a ZF 4 speed auto into a RV8 stag then i think it is best to use a gearbox from a BMW or JAG. You can use the range rover gearbox but it's not just a matter of removing the transfer box you have to replace the main output shaft and then fit a different tail housing. I think the only problems fitting a BMW or JAG box are 1) speedo drive ( none fitted )

              2) you will need the R/Rover torque converter and spacers plus drive plate ( the R/rover T/converter does not bolt straight on to the drive plate it needs a spacer/adapter plate as well) and of course the bellhousing
