Definitely NOT Stag related - but information still needed

My wife has had this brainwave about taking me over to British Columbia to see my brother, for my 50th birthday present - we haven't actually got together except via MSN video and phone for 12 years, so it's a bit overdue!

All was going great planning and booking until we got to the travel insurance tonight....

Since I last went over, I've had a heart attack (just under 2 years ago and as far as I'm concerned fully recovered and probably healthier than ever) and some knob of a nurse practitioner has declared me type 2 diabetic - this has created a veritable minefield regarding insurance..... no-one will touch me with travel cover for Canada with these pre-existing conditions despite them being fully declared and covered for Europe.....

Has anyone else had this problem and could maybe point me towards an insurer with some common sense? As far as I'm concerned a declared successfully treated condition is much better than an unknown medical time-bomb!!!

The alternative is to go without insurance - not a good idea should I bust a leg or similar.......

        Russ,

I'm in the same boat too, heart attack at 47 caused by defect in artery, nothing about lifestyle etc. Fit as a butchers dog now but when I went for travel insurance with M&S they doubled my cost and wouldn't cover me for heart. I'm afraid you're labelled, much as me and many others. It's all a bit of an excuse as they are not assessing your risk, just a risk in general.

Anyway, I found that the BHF website has a number of insurance companies that specialise in people who have had coronary events. Look there and give a few a ring, I'd be interested to see how you get on.

Just as an aside to this, you should see the hoops I've had to go through to get my medical resinstated so that I can fly again.

              Russ

I had a quadruple bypass five years ago and had some similar difficulty. Then a broker found me a policy. My wife declare our conditions, but the important thing is that we are able to state that there has been no change to our conditions or our medications for them in the last year.

The insurance is with LLoyds. Being over 65 I have 100% weighting. Cover is to Oregon for 16 days.Cost £130.43

I'll send you the brokers info in a PM

I know that the UK and Australia have a reciprocal public health arrangement, so your boss should be okay.

Russ, Just a thought as Canada is a Commonwealth country, there may be a similar arrangement that you can take advantage of?

                regards,

                Raoul

Russ, try this - it is a forum for bypassers it may help - it's about half way down under travel insurance

                  Cheers, Mark

Hi, Firstly never, under any circumstances never travel abroad without medical insurance.

I went to Malaysia and Singapore last year and when I applied for medical insurance the same limitations applied to me, type 2Diabetes, I was running around like a headless chicken at the last minute trying to get medical insurance.

I was able to get insurance with Boots chemist insurers, but you have to ring up aspecial number they give you for people with medical conditions. they were reasonable with the charges, (other required a pound of flesh.:X)

Did you have to wear a gym kit to go through them Tim?

                      The mind boggles.....

It has been my wish for some time to take my PPL, but usually cash flow has been an issue so I have just contented myself with grabbing an hour dual at Redhill on their Super Cub, or my wife's cousins PA28 when the urge gets too much.

I assume that achieving medical status for a PPL is attainable, but not without obstacles then?

                        Russ,
My daughter's husband works for a Company (in Essex) that specialises in providing Insurance for people who have difficulty getting Insurance through the normal channels.
If you want to I could pass your details onto him (via email) or give you my daughter's email address so you can send an email direct.

Russ.. go for the NPPL the medical is less stringent being akin to the requirements for the driving licence.

I harboured the same ambition for flying and logged20 hrs over a long period of time off..on etc only to find that I have a problem with my ears..sinus related and soon as I get over 1000ft the pain is way bad. So all plans are off funny but the flying fund was cancelled and I bought my car lift with the proceeds. So I would say you go for it my freind

                            Russ,

I got my worldwide Travel insurance through moneysupermarket.com from a company calledMarcus Hearn. http://www.marcushearn.co.uk/travel_form.phpThis includes USA and Canada

As part of the application you have to ring up Travellers Health check to declare any medical conditions on 08456 582 999. They then decide on any additional charge.

I disclosed my type 2 and said truthfully that its fully controlled by diet, the result, no extra premium.

The annual cost for worldwide cover was just £61 for me and the Mrs, and I am 66!

                            Good luck

                            Al

                              Russ,

no gym kit....forms, forms more forms and Gatwick CAA medical branch.

Medical would be no problem but more checks than normal. As said, NPPL an option but only if you want to fly uk registered aircraft in uk airspace, which for some is ok, but I go further afield.

I'll happily take you up one day, maybe get a couple of friends together and do a channel islands trip for the day.
