    Rear wheel bearings

I am a little concerned about the condition of the rear wheel bearings . If I jack the car up at the rear and move the wheel top to bottom (as you would if testing the front wheel bearings )there is about 1/8 play backwards and forwards is this excessive . The reason for checking was that there is a slight vibration from the back of the car at speed and I was wondering if this was the course

    Hi John

If you are testing them the same as you do the front, then you should never feel any movement at all.

This will cause vibration but usually when a bearing goes or starts going, there is a drone at certain speeds where there bearing is not happy running at a certain speed.

One thing I would check is that there is no movement at all between the hub and the studs on the trailing arms.if one or two have pulled, you may be saving the wheel coming off. I only mention this as there is never that much movement on a rear bearing to cause 1/8 inch.

    Good luck

I would disagree there Andrew - I've had 1/8" play at the wheel rim when the previous owner failed to knock the locktabs over on the big nuts that set the endfloat and it started to self-dismantle....

It still drove ok except for a small squeak from the rear under certain conditions......

Hi Andrew no play between hub and trailing arms it is defiantly at the bearing this means they need replacing I guess

Russ thanks for the reply would you advise immediate replacement

If it isn't noisy, you could try adjusting out the play - what have you got to lose - the ROM details how it's done in section 64.15.13.......

If you are desperate I have a magnetic base dial indicator that you could borrow for the job, but not the spanners.... although I'm sure you could find your way around that.

Considering what a blee***g aweful job changing those bearings is, could you not accept 1/8th at the wheel rim ? That really is a tiny amount at the hub. In my ignorance, I thought those bearings had to be pre-loaded, is there any adjustment available ? :? Martin.

Interesting Russ. Something else I have learnt off this forum and I will add to my list of things to check going forward.

                Cheers

They are adjustable, and in fact have to be set up with a tiny but precise amount of endfloat (axial free play) of 2 -5 thou hence the dial indicator - definitely NOT pre-loaded though...

You do have to remove the hub to adjust them though

                          Hi John

Have you checked the UJ's as mine was really noisy when it went just over a week ago? Do you have a squeak from the rear as this is a good sign it's the UJ.

When I stripped the old UJ out two bearings had grease the other two had disintegrated due to being totally dry!!
