    Water pump advice

Just bit the bullet and bought a couple of reconditioned heads, primarily to replace the damaged left hand head on my Stag but am now replacing both heads.

Been advised to have the water pump reconditioned whilst the engine is in bits, however Ivealso beenadvised to replace the 12 vaneI have fitted with a 6 vane as they are supposedly less prone to failing. My 12 vane pump has been on the car for the last 12 years so Im reluctant to replace it although I will have it reconditioned, any comments?

Been quoted £500 to fit the heads which seems reasonable.

    Hi Dave

Good to hear you are keeping the Stag. I know that Howard Vessey prefers a 6 vane pump, but I wonder if you can just change the impeller and cover, I would be reluctant to change the pump as it is matched to the jackshaft and you know it is good. Easy job to recon the pump, will cost about £15 for the kit. Pity I don't live nearer as I would give you a hand to fit the heads for the cost of the gaskets.

    Good luck-Bob

Thanks for the advice Bob, Im going to pull the pump out later this week so will make a decision then.

Heads are good but have had a skim so I guess I should use the thick payen gaskets.

      Thanks again

Hiya Dave, best advice, research thoroughly on timing chain replacement andfit the heads yourself, it's not complicated, just twice the work of a four pot, and you're right about Payen gaskets.

Most of the gasket suppliers, Wards, Robsport, Paddocks, LGand several others will give you good advice, even if you don't buy the parts from them, most are looney enthusiasts just like us and will help because it's the right thing to do, to illustrate, John Ward runs a Stag, and Mick has a Mk 1 2000 with a Stag engine.Sadly, there's thepossible exception of . . . . .

The probs involved are getting the buggers off - not putting them back. Martin.

Cant advise strongly enough to have the impellor modified, see the images on LDPart website. This will prevent future leaking and is a cheap job. You can get the impellor and kit from LDPart and as others have advise, keep your old pump shaft.

I have dont mine amd very pleased

Dave, unless the heads have had a heavy skim (you can tell by how close the valves are to the surface) you will be able to use standard gaskets, they are cheaper too. But yes use the Payen ones.

Thanks for all the advice guys much appreciated. Heads were replaced 11 years ago by Wards so Im hoping they greased the studs and the heads come off easy.

Also been advised to renew the studs and head bolts which I am going to do.

Anybody have detailed advice on judging which Payen gaskets to use, as I a said the replacement heads have been eaqualy skimmedunlike the ones currently fitted and theres a choice of standard, thick or extra thick Payen gaskets, how do you decide which to use?

If you're not certain how much was skimmed off, I would have thought the thick gaskets, otherwise you may run into valve clearance issues - just a thought.

John Ward told methey grease the studs and bolts, and the studs should not be bottomed, nipped up then back half a turn.Martin.

Thanks Martin, will make things a lot easier if they have greased them.

                    Hi Bob

Stags fate isnt quite sealed yet, Deb (Olive) is selling her Minx due to lack of use and I am considering selling the Stag butdont want to sell it whilst its in bits. I want to repair it properly, get the paintwork sorted and drive the damn thing and then make up my mind.

As Ive said before Ive become a bit disillusioned re the quality of workIve had done and the quality of parts Ive bought for the car in the past. Just hoping the bodywork guy Im thinking of using is as good as he says he is,as its make or break this time:?.

Tony heart sells a DVD explaining how to do timing chains. It will give you a good idea how that side of things all comes apart/goes back together.

I had to have a diesel pump fitted to my Audi they quoted me £2500, I got it rebuilt in the end for £1600 and I can't see anything for it, so money spent on a Stag that will hold it's value can't be too bad. Anyway who's going to drink my beer with me at Nat. Day if you sell the Stag:P

How much is reasonable to spend annually on a hobby?

When I decided to buy the Stag I budgeted on spending in the region of £1000.00 per year to keep it on the road. So far I haven't spent anything like that but who know what the future holds

Would stamp collecting have been any cheaper:shock:

                            Dave,

My daughter just paid out £573 for a service and some remedial work on her 10 year old Fiesta. Nothing serious but she needed it doing quickly, hence the cost. It's unfortunate that these things are so costly but a stag is not necessarily an exception. Stick with it.

My neice bought a new Fiesta before Christmas. One of the new ones that everyone says are great. The central locking packed up last week so she took it back to the dealer. They couldn't look at it until tomorrow, meanwhile she has had to contend with leaving a new car, which cannot be secured properly, on the streets of Birmingham. The dealer's comment? "You have to expect teething problems with a new car".

My response would have been: NO YOU DON'T. THAT'S WHYPEOPLE BUYNEW CARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Makes owning a Stag seem relatively stress free.
