    disintegrating foam

The recent thread on seat foams got us talking at our local SOC meet on Sunday. Jeff had a theory about why the foam falls apart and it is based on the fact that his seats were perfect until.................... he had his car resprayed!

He reckons that it might be something to do with the mix of thinners and paint in the air in a body shop

Initially we told him he was talking bo**ocks... (we often do) but then someone else said that fitted in with the history of their car as well.

Do the seats in unrestored cars last longer? Can anyone substaniate substashiate back up this theory or confirm my conjecture that it’s twaddle

    Hi Dave,

I would say that its twaddle, if you remember last year i did the drivers seat with a crap kit , at this time the passengers seat was fine. This year after the 5month lay up the passengers seat foam started to disintegrate, as the car was re sprayed well over 10 years ago i don't think this is an issue. Both seats had original foam and i would say that its probably the 30 odd years of use that make them fail.

    Cheers

      Hi David

      Interesting thought

However it is known that the old BL foams do turn to crumbs.

but how about the thought that the soft top cars which are exposed to sunlight and hence more heat than the saloon variants would be similar to that heat generated within the oven of a paint shop:shock::shock::shock:

therefore the amount of exposure to heat would be proportional to the rate of degrading of the foam

Perhaps toxic gases from driver consumed curries and brown beers are to blame
