Any decentbrand will do, but you'll need a type 071 or 089 for the right dimensions.

I fitted an 072 6 years ago that was listed as the heavy duty version for a Stag.

It was however, a verytight fit in the battery box even after trimming off the unnecessary clamping lugs on the base of the battery.Itwas difficult to fit the rods for the retaining clamp. Maybe the listing was wrong.

I would recommend you take some accurate measurements if you are not taking the car to have the battery fitted.

Well that will teach me to mention the battery - mine has just completely died on me with no warning signs at all.

Taking my own advice I went out yesterday armed with my tape measure and found that the 072 is the heavy duty version of the 071 with the same size casing. It was also apparent that the first 072 I fitted 6 years ago had a slightlybigger casing than the ones I looked at yesterday which explains the problemsI had fitting it.

I bought the 072 again and it fitted without any difficulty (apart from the usual ones). This one has an indicator that will hopefully give me some warning when it is about to fail.

Hi, you can do yourself a big favour and fit a battery cut off device. You simply fit to the neg battery terminal, fits nicely and looks smart , just unscrew the knob to turn off the battery, or remove it so no one can pinch the car.

Ebay sell them for £5, good investment, old cars seem to loose charge somewhere, clocks etc!

            Malc,

The type on that link seems to be the total disconnect type. There are some available with a small fuse across that will allow clocks, alarms, radio memory, etc to work, but will blow if someone hot wires the car to start it.

Stag battery should easily cope with being left for some timefeeding the above small current items. Mine spends 2 weeks out of every 4 in the garage and when I come home it starts first pull. The battery is a Banner 072, bought several years ago from the local accessory shop.

              Hi Keith,

Just in case you are still searching for a battery I can add to the knowledge already submitted following my purchase of a new battery on Saturday.

I went out to buy either a 072 or 089, being the heavy duty versions of 071. However I did not like the priceof what I saw and many of them I couldn't measure because not all suppliers had them in stock.

I ended up with a Varta 069, the precise Varta part number being 570 138 057 2082 This is in their Asia range and their web site actually has the Stag listed. However, they are recommending an 071 equivalent on their product selector guide whereas what I bought is 570Amp cold cranking current, 70 Ah capacity. It fits without any modification.

The Halfords 072 battery is also a perfect fit in my MKII Stag
