Differential play

Hi all you experts!,

I experience a clunk when changing into reverse so have had a look at the propshaft, diff and axles. The UJs all seem fine, no loose bolts, etc but there's what seems to me to be a huge amount of play in the diff. I can rotate the propshaft about 15mm before any movement is seen in the axles and I can feel and hear a grating while doing this. There's plenty of oil splashed around outside the casing but that seems to be par for the course according to the forums.
The diff is quiet enough....is this normal? Should I just top it up and leave well alone?

Just checked my spare diff in my garage and can say that you could well have 12-15mm of movement in your diff and still not have any noise from it. Peter

I've only had my stag for a few weeks so am still finding my way around all the wobbly and broken bits and new diff wasn't really what I wanted to tackle next!
On the whole she seems ok and I love the driving experience. The Michelotti looks are very seductive, the sound is absolutely astounding, the ride and handling are far, far better than I'd expected and with four proper seats (and belts and disc brakes) the stag's a perfect classic. If only I could find that oil leak and get the air out of the clutch hydraulics....!

Looks like I've joined the right club! You guys are so helpful.

The forum's fantastic....I've just learned that I should rotate my clutch slave cylinder to get the nipple to the top before bleeding it.

Hi Graham, unless the oil leak is costing money or burning I should leave it alone, it's the most wonderful rust proofing you can have ! Martin.
