    Sub axle marks

When changing my discs, i found the stub axle looked as in the attached photos.

I believe the black is from the hardening from new and that the stag stubs where harder than other triumphs- is that correct?

There are indentations/ dentson the stub,I replaced the outer bearing race as shown and where that rests on the stub there are no marks.

Are these normal, is the stub axle ok or do i need to replace it??

as an asside, when i put the calpier back I was scratching my head for half an hour figuring out why I had a "bent" caliper as it did not sit paralel to the disc as shown below. look at the bottom of the photothe disk is near touching the caliper. thought i had a big problem.

It turned out the disc backing plate (stone gard) mount that runs throught the caliper bolt was missing at the bottom (but present at the top), so the caliper was a mm closer at the bottom. looking at the old pads it had been assembeled like this last time!!!

I fixed with a washer for now.

Evening Sunny! The marks look suspiciously similar to the marks that Stilson wrenches leave.... I wonder if a previous owner might have changed the stub axle and used a pair of stilsons to "hold against" as he tightened up the retaining nut ?

As the marks aren't on any bearing surface it looks like your ok, looks like there might be a shortageof hammerite in scotland though....

Just replaced my disks, my stub axles didn't have those indentations and I don't recall seeing discolouration like that either. Sorry didn't take any pictures with the disks off, only once all back together.

Yes they are coming together well, I did a trial fit today. The disc/caliper combination should work ok. The disc is mounted on the hub and no interference. After offering up the caliper it needs an adaptor machined up to suit. Interestingly the mounting holes of the toyota caliper match the Triumph. But as I am using larger diameter discs the caliper is therefore placed further away so the need for an adaptor plate.

Also just to add to the confusion I have now found that there are 3 types of caliper available. #1 the one I have with 4 pots of which 2 are larger than the other 2 and built for solid discs so a spacer for the calipers are required. #2 same as above but wider for vented discs and #3 with all 4 pots the same size at 43mm pistons. Not sure which way to go now :?

Interestingly even the standard toyota caliper and renault disc combination gives nearly 50% additional pad area coverage over the standard set up.

Going to need an air bag to counter the stopping power of that baby!!
