    Rear Shock Absorber

    Hi everybody,

I am a new forum member from Germany (Munich) and this is the first time that I try to get a technical advise via this forum. I am going to renew the rear shock absorbers and would like to know which brand is advisable for maximum comfort (Spax, Koni, Gaz...) I am not a fast driver so cornering is not so important. At the time being I have Monroe shocks installed and I find them rather uncomfortable.

Hope to hear from somebody, Klaus

    Willkommen, Klaus.

Nice to get someone from Germany on board. This is becoming quite an international Forum now.

Personally I have had no adverseproblems with 'standard' rear shock absorbers as available from most of the usual Stag suppliers, and also from many other outlets. On my last Stag I fitted Boge units and found them fine as well. My current Stag has Gas-a-just units. Whether they have gas in them or not I don't know. They don't appear to be adjustable though. They can be got from James Paddocks and give a nice comfortable ride.

      Hi Klaus.

Welcome. Are they too hard or soft? I fitted Spax adjustables on the rear, 4 clicks from minimum out of 28. They are fine.

      John.

        Hi John and Dave,

thanks for your answer. I find the Monroes too hard. Concerning Spax: Tony Hart told me 10 years ago that Spax with 3 clicks are excellent for cruising on country roads. That is the same experience which you have made. At that timeI could not get Spax in Germany which is not a problem now. I think I will go in this direction.

I use Spax too. On my previous Stag they made such a difference to the ride having followed the HRS recommendations. (3 clicks).

My current project will certainly get a pair. They seem to have shot up in price recently - anyone know of a good place to buy them these days?

                Hello Klaus.

Thank you for the info that 3 clicks is suggested by Tony Hart. I just set mine on 4 as a starting point and never bothered to change them. Click 28 must be rock hard!!

                  Hi Klaus

The fronts are £91.99 at performance direct, last time I brought a set I seem to remember £65 so they have gone up quite considerably.

.... and £15 each for postage. LDPart will be cheaper overall, and great service.

Stuart, LD 's are £101 each for fronts,so the same as Monarch's ,but this post is about rear shocks which are £145 pair from Monarch and £57 each from LD.

LD have to be the best bet for rears at the moment and as stated ,great service.

                        Cheers Steve
