    April Magazine Article

Age is a funny thing. Some people are old whilst they are young and obviously the opposite applies. I knew the moment the kids saw my wedding video and said “who’s that dancing with Mum” that the years have not been kind to me. I don’t care because I am older not old and I try to take as little as possible seriously but, what has this got to do with Stags and the Stag Forum?

Well, the members of the SOC have been joining the club forum in their hundreds during the few months we have been promoting it in the club magazine. In part, this is probably out of curiosity but it is also representative of the new (younger?) members who are joining or more likely becoming active within the club. As an example, somewhere in the magazine, there is a picture of a recent “forum meet and greet” at Stoneleigh and some of these guys look young enough to still be in the Vauxhall Corsa owners club!

One of our newest members Russell is actually a full-time student although he still manages to find some time to make 20 or so posts a day. If he keeps on like this, the king of the green’s (also called Russ….) posting record has a serious challenger. Watch this space

Should you choose to have a look, you will find that we also like to help each other and use the anytime/anywhere interaction to arrange both short and advance notice events. Please be advised that the event Bob Heritage from Sussex is arranging has to be one of the best things you can do in your stag this year.

You may recall the write-up he wrote for the magazine of last years Historic Sports Car Championship Grand Prix Meeting at Brands Hatch? Well, for this years event on July 5th, Bob has negotiated that pre-booked Stags and their passengers can make a full parade lap of the full Grand Prix circuit in between races. How good is that!

You can book your ticket in advance at http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/ or on 01474872331 (ÂŁ1 dearer) and then contact Bob before the end of May to allow him to make the arrangements with the track. Hope to see you there!

Another first this month was an American Journalist who posted a report on the Stag across the pond and then joined in the debate about our reactions to him. Fairly certain he could not have predicted some of the responses he received.

Whilst some things are new, others are less so. Since June 2007, we have also been following Julian’s restoration. His car was stuck in a lock up and he didn’t know what to do with. He ended-up deciding to restore and all the members have been following progress on-line and at EJ Wards where people report back when they pop in to collect something. Check raise or fold – our number 1 post with over 200 posts. Its going to be fantastic but I wouldn’t want that bill though….

As well as the top-end supercharger project, Chris, V Mad has developed a twin choke weber conversion kit to bolt-on in place of the strombergs (contact me by email below or Chris via the forum) and for those who want to see the ultimate Triumph V8 power house, the Supercharged Stag is now confirmed at the Bromley Pageant of motoring.

Other subjects covered today (this evening!!!) include:
    • Tips for hood and frame maintenance.
    • Which tyres
    • CV Joints
    • Up-coming events
    • Wheel arch problems
    • Door seals
    • DIY paint jobs – have you succeeded?
    • Suspension bushes.

Last month, the subject of Avatars was covered and one in particular has been the subject of much searching. If you haven’t found it yet keep looking!

We hope these articles tempt you to have a look and join in. If you don’t already know how, you can access the forum via the SOC web site at http://www.stag.org.uk/index.aspx or if you get stuck, email me at stagforum@anvuk.com and I will help you get on-line.

We hope to see you on the forum soon

Nice one Graham, especially the reference to younger members, we need them, old buggers like me are not going to be around forever, as much as I wish it, andpeop[le like Adrian and Russell are vital to the Stag's continuedsurvival and promotion, their enthusiasm has to be hugely admired. Thanks for the nice inclusion Graham and for the kind words Martin - very much appreciated!

One thing i certainly am is enthusiastic! These Car's stir the soul and this site is invaluable for the knowledge and for the banter side of things too, all of which goes into making the Stag such a fabulous package! Thanks for making me most welcome all.

Graham - Great article as usual and I am so pleased that the Forum members at Stoneleigh could be from the Nova club - I was one of them but don't know whether it applies to me?

One of the great things about the forum is the mix of ages, skills, experience and location - but there is one thing in common -a mostly love affair or for some a love/hate relationship with their Stags.

Graham, thanks for the mention of my Weber project, etc. On the subjet of age, we have a good mix of ages in the Surrey area, although the average is probably leaning towards older rather than younger, but only in years, not in outlook!

Although I myself am no longer young in chronological terms, my appetite for fun has not really changed. In particular I like driving fast on occasions (always legally of course, ahem) and I wonder if some of the younger (or older) members have considered or have already taken part in track days? A couple of years back when I first bought my Sunbeam Tiger (sorry no Stag at the moment) I went to Castle Combe for a Classic Action day. The format is you just pay a small fee for each 15 minute track session, and if you go as a club you get in free (saving about ÂŁ10 or ÂŁ15).

My first outing was terrifying with hot hatches piling up behind approaching the bends, but after a couple of laps I soon had the hang of it and was holding my own with a Porsche, and a Capri 3000 behind kept spinning off trying to keep up with me! My son was dead impressed. Next year I went in with 15 inch low profile tyres, and I found the hot hatches were then fair game. I also met a fellow Surrey area Stag enthusiast (hello Peter) who takes his Stag out on the track and says he is surprised how well it handles.

If anyone young in age or at heart fancies a go this year there are two or three Action Days at Castle Combe (Somerset, come on you west country boys) why not post a new topic and get some support, see if there are a few takers. Its a great day out (Carl came last year in his Stag too).

                Check out this link: http://www.castlecombecircuit.co.uk/actiondays.htm

I was also reading (Classic Car Weekly) about the drag strip at North Weald just on the M11 by the M25. This is a turn up and 'run what ya brung' type event. No special license needed just a helmet. How about that for an event?

Been here for a year now with Stag77, what have I been missing all these years?

I remember back in 1978 in my Dads old Triumph 2.5 PI Mk2 burning the backs of my legs in my school uniform short trousers on the way to school... :?
Them damn "leather" seats I thought, why can't my Dad have a proper car with cloth seats....

And in the winter of 1978 he did change his car, to seats of a velour nature...
                  A bronze Capri Ghia 2000...

So 70's - I have a cool Dad (was a Capri cool in 1978?) and he loves the Stag too!

It is a bit strange not too many youngsters know about Stags - But when they see them, hear them or ride in them..... they are gob-smacked! :dude:

                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back in 1971 my old man bought a Capri 1600 GT XLR (silver with a matt black bonnet and vinyl roof), swapped it for the 2.5 PI in 73 (which he kept for 5 years) and then got his 2nd Capri in "78!

He bought the MK2 saloon as the pram wouldn't fit in the Capri boot, Lol!

---- Doyle I reckon, his hair was never permed!

I always thought my dads cars were cool right from the capri through to mk3 cortinas including an estate i which my mum, dad, two sisters and me in the load bay and luggage on the roof rack for those holidays(who needs a people carrier) i even though his Leyland Princess was cool.

Bring back the good old days.

                          Ah the Leyland Princess....

If ony they'd given it a hatchback and kept the Wolseley name....

But we all know how great BL were in those days - after all - they had a BMW range in
Triumph cars and they left the marque to wither .

Bed now, I have a date with my Stag tomorrow - Roof down hopefully:dude:

Cool cars, what's that ? My old man had a collection of junk, 1946 Hillman Minx, 1953 850 Morris Minor convertible, I guess that's where I got my taste for ragtops, 1951 Humber Super Snipe, used to bounce up and down if he tried to accelerate away from the lights, '54 Minx, sidevalve- aweful, and so on. There never was such a thing as the good old days - it's a myth. Martin.
