What size steel?

Hi All

If I am to repair my splash panel I need to know what thickness steel plate to use is it 1.6mm thick?

I have a welder and grinder etc so just need to get some steel but can not remember what thickness to use:?

I find 1.0 mm good for non-structural work. Try using Zintec plated steel sheet, it helps prevent rust, and keeps longer in storage without rusting. If you cant get Zintec coat the panel in weld-through primer first.

:shock:18 gauge i think 1.2 and thats more than enough especialy when you need to shape it .and use a zinc rich primer when done to protect and itll probably last another thirty years.

Is Zintec Zinc coated? I ask this because Zinc gives off arsenic gas which we all know kills!

Zintec is a type of zinc plating process. I am no chemist, but how can you get arsenic from burning zinc?

Isn't that Chlorine it gives off? I seem to remember from the old days that the trick was to drink a pint of milk before welding galv as it offset the effects.... I expect the "brains trust" will put me right

When I went to colleage to learn fabrication we were told when welding Zinc Plated steels fully ventilated welding helmets should be used due to the Zinc Plating giving off arsenic gases.

The fumes are airborne particulate zinc oxide - they give you what's known as "fume fever" that will make you pig sick for about 8 hours if you get enough inhalation.

Allegedly there are no lasting effects though

Ive had the "fume fever" very nasty, thought I was dying got it from breathing the fumes whilst passing a fitter welding some galv pipework in a confined space, Im not sure about the no side affects bit.

Zintec is not like galvanized steel, its only got a light coating. I welded a few peices last week with no discomfort all. In fact I feel abso... abso... absolute...... ley fi............. fi........ ....... fine .......... ...... ....... ... .. . . . . . .
