    Thermostat change

    Hi all,

I plan to replace the thermostat this weekend while the radiator's out for (yet another) repair. The relevant section in the repair operations manual states that a jointing compound should be used along with a new gasket - is this necessary? I would have assumed that as long as the housing surfaces were clean and sound a new gasket should be sufficient on it's own.

However I'm prepared to bow to superior knowledge.....

    Cheers,

    Bob.

      Bob,

I have often refitted the thermostat cover with just grease on bothsides of the gasket. Obviously this requires a new, quality gasket, both surfaces to betrueand requires the fixing bolts to be correctly tightened. The theory is that grease allows the gasket to slide into the best position and swells the gasket slightly as it permeates the surface.

Any doubt and use a sealant. Blue Hylomar is excellent. Many swear by Stag Wellseal. I have used the latter for the first time during recent engine work and have no leaks.

I suppose these days I should add: 'Other sealants are of course available'.

Thanks guys, I suppose belt and braces might be a good policy - so I've just bought a tube of Hylomar off good ol' eBay.

        Cheers,

        Bob.

Can it be worth it what with postage and the waiting?

I remember when you could get thermostat gaskets from Asda. "Universal" rather than "quality" would be a better description though.

I have always used grease and never had a problem.
