    Possible clutch problem?

    Hi all,

I have owned 4 Stags in 20years andI have finally got a stag that moves of it's own accord ...... and what a thrill.

Is the thing about Stags the fact that your never really sure your going to get to where you want to go?

However just noticed that in reverse, with full lock on, it sounds as if the rear wheels are spinning or skidding but they're actually not. Could this be a clutch problem? If so what?

I also would like to know howcan you tellwhat type of timing chains are fitted. Mine make no noise on start up, BUT the previous owner thinks they were last replaced 8 years ago and I am worried they may be German and will break suddenlyrather than make an audiblewarning noise.

Who would you buy a QUALITY timing chain kit from?

Lastly, Is it normal for the temperature gauge to just about reach the red before cabin heater air heats and temperature needle drops back to just below middle? - (When it does this it's a real heart in mouth feeling. )

Definitely lastly, how do you flush your rad, in situ or out? and what with?

    Regards

    Gary

PS: I have beenwatching and readingthe posts on this forum for quite some time and I am a member of numerous others from football to TR's and I must saythis iswithout doubt thebest, with friendly posters, plenty offirst hand owners info and good craic.

by the way did anyone mentionGRAND SLAM??

    Hi Burble

You say you get the 'skidding' noise when on full lock in reverse? Are you sure this is not the power steering belt slipping?

To flush the rad remove the top and bottom hoses then stick a hose pipe in the top and run water through the rad then do the same from the bottom.

After that jack the car up on the passenger side and undo the drain plugs on the block (one each side behind the exhaust manifolds/downpipes) then replace when empty.

replace hoses make sure heater valve fully open (hot) and refill with distilled water and 33% antifreeze suitably for the Stag squeezing the hoses to make sure there's no air locks.

Lower the car and top rad up to full then the expansion bolt to 1/4 full. Warm engine up to full temp then cool. Check levels and top up if necessary and squeeze hoses again.

I would also put a new thermostat in whilst you do this job bets place LD Parts.

Your heater gauge sound strange, I would do the above then check again. You may need to replace the heater matrix of the voltage stabiliser (back of speedo).

      Hi Gary

I use an old top hose cut in halfand flush with mains pressure with this home made thing(need to take the stat out).if it was the first time of flushing i would take out the block drain plugs and get rid of the sand first though(proberbly have to dig around with a screwdriver in the hole to get things moving )replace the plugs, then fit the mains kit.

BTW the gauge and ball valves wereonly for pressure testing the system and you dont needthem for flushing.

      Cheers Steve

            Hi Burble,

I had what you describe once with an A Type overdrive which was adjusted incorrectly, not disengaging properly I seem to remember. As Stuart says, my power steering belt makes a noise on full lock too.

Someone with with technical knowledge on this will be along soon I'm sure!
