    Boot lid hinges

My Stag is ready to go to the paint shop and over the weekend I decided that I would first double check the fit of the doors, bonnet and trunk lid. The bonnet and doors went on fine and the fit is great. When I came to install the trunk hinges onto the body I had such a struggle and in the end I put the hinges in the vice and then wired them in the trunk closed position. I eventually managed to install them on the body and got everything lined up good. Now all of the doors, bonnet, trunk lid and hinges will be removed for painting. I am concerned thatI will have to repeat hinge performance and possibly damage the new paintwork. Is there an easier way to install these hinges.

    Regards

    Hi Dave

In a word no,or if there is I haven't found it,I fitted new hinges to mine last year and had to fit then as you described . Unfortunately one came undone whilst fitting and punched a large dent in my newly sprayed rear wing

GOOD LUCK YOU WILL NEED IT

Just a thought, but would you be better off getting the car sprayed with the hinges already in place? Less risk of damaging the paintwork then.

I have now made a little jig to compress the hinge safely and now have the choice to install them at any point of the spraying process. I think that I will let the painter make that decision

        Thanks

                  Hi Raoul

Here is one photo with 3 more to follow. This is very easy to make and it is cheap. Its made from 1/4-20 threaded rod,a nut & washer. The threaded can easily be bent to the shape shown if the photos and the only thing that I would add is some tape to the threads to protect the paint on the hinges.

This is one of those things that you will keep in your tool box and in 5 or 6 years wonder what on earth it is for.

                  Regards

Very ingenious, why didn't I think of that?

I just love the technical content of this forum

The garage air is a very deep shade of blue after trying to get those b****y hinges out and the opening where they fit now looks like a dog-eared book.

I was about to post a question if I'm just too dumb to work out the remove / refit method and thought I'd use the search first!

There seems to have been a change in production as the Workshop Manual mentions two screws each side and there are actually four. I guess the hole in the panel was designed for a smaller hinge unit with just two screws and one flange.

I plan to enlarge that hole slightly as it was only a matter of a couple of milimetres stopping the things coming out. Left side was easier as the right side inner wheel archhas a small bracket which gets in the way.

Good idea with the retaining rod
                            The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137
