    Rear Seatbelts

I spent a few hours trying to identify a 2nd user rear seatbelt that would be the correct angle to work in my Mk1 Stag after the originals started to lock up. I have found that Mk4 Fiesta belts work fine. You need to get a grinder to remove the shoulder buckle and some of the back tangs but other than that they work like a dream. The 2 belts cost me £24 in total so quite a saving to be had.

A lot of folk would say that using S/H seatbelts isn't a good idea, you need to be sure of where they came from, saving money on lifesaving kit isn't something I would do.

I have checked them, they are in excellent condition. They went through an MOT fine. You make a valid point though.

Speaking as someone who has used second had seat belts in the past in other cars - once after the dog chewed them!I have been down that route. Lets face it any belt must be better than no belt in 95% of circumstances.

I ended up fitting new in my stag though as a bit if research pursuded me it was a false economy to go second hand. Can't remember the web site, but some of the info out there pointed out how you can not see the damage. one point is that in a impact the webbing of the belt stretches someting like 18%. This takes some of the shock from your body. Once this has happened there is no more stretch, so next time this energy absrobing feature isn't there.

This has been mentioned before but the overall effectiveness of the rear seatbelts in the Stag is limited because there is no top mounting and the metal behind the rear seat at the top is not strong enough to withstand an impact. I agree that they are better than nothing and I hope it would be strong enough to reduce injuries to my kids, but I doubtthey would stop an adult hitting the seat in front in an accident of any severity. Let's hope no one has to find out.

I was quite shocked that they still sell lap belts for the back of a Stag. I cannot see these offering much protection in a decent shunt.

I suppose they would help prevent you being flung out of the car, but you would definately head butt the seat in front!
