    Splash Panel removal and fitting

    Hi All

As part of my repairs during the Easter holiday I will hopefully be fitting the SOCTFL splash panel I bought today.

    Question:

Has anyone fitted one of these panels?

If so have you any advice on how to remove the old one without damaging the outer wing and the best practice for fitting the new one?

E J Ward want £250 to fit this panel which I suppose is a fair price but I don't have the funds to do this right now so would like to do it myself. I have a MIG welder, angle grind etc but lack the knowledge (until I remove the under seal) of how this panel is attached and how to remove it safely.

      Hi Ray

      Read and replied thanks.

Question is an End mill better at removing spot welds rather than a drill which has a point on it?

        Stuart,

If I don't want to damage either panel I use a spring loaded drill that I bought from Frost Restoration a few years back. It is really a small hole cutter but with a centre point to locate it and stop it wandering off. My one has lasted really well. This is a link to the one the currently sell - I think it is the same one as I have,

They also do a simpler drill:

I would think that an end mill would be impossible to use as there is no centre point to stop it wandering about.

            Hi All

            Progress report

I have cleaned of the filler, sealer and under seal and it is not as bad as I feared!

Although it is a good job I am doing it now as left any longer the outer wing would have been effected soon:shock:

Just took some pictures for reference and proof I have done the job properly, which is something the previous people did not:X

If it is only that one hole do you really need to change the entire panel? Could you not cut out the rotten metal and weld in a patch?

                  Hi All

Well got the suspension done by 2pm today so moved onto the splash panel. I was going to patch weld it but could not get any sheet steel during the week so have opted to remove the panel!

I am glad I did as it would of only got worse and effected the sill behind and the outer wing.

I have taken some photos for referance to anyone else trying to remove this panel I hope they are of help in some way.

Just got to figure out how to fit the new one now!:?

Whilst doing the job I found a grommet which will allow wax injection to the rear of the panel and surrounding panels!I believe it is behind the carpet which is attached to the A post inner panel.

                      Prevention is better than ignorance!

                        Hi All

I have trimmed the last few peices of metal from the area and have had to admit defeat for know!

The strip of metal that the splash panel attaches to if corroded badly towards the bottom so will have to be built up with new metal which I do not have!

I also can not see how to get the splash panel into the area?

Is it a case of brute force to get it to sit in at the top behind the inner arch?

I think I will take the car over to the body shop and get them to fit it at least the bill should be a bit cheaper now I have removed the old panel:?

                          Hi Stuart

If the panel wont fit at the top it is possible that it needs trimming the original ones didn't fit that well so we have little Chance with re- pro ones .
