    Broken down again ... live!

    Hi All

Sat in Stag - not going anywhere fast ... not engine - just spent '000s on rebuild - nop, it's the fuel pump not pumping anymore! It's getting power but no clicking ... tried a light tap etc ... nothing.

So waiting for flatbed to take me home!

Any advice on fuel pumps - as to swap out? Replace with electronic?

    Cheers

    Alan

      Hi Alan

The points can get dirty, its a case of removing the end cap and giving them a clean up with some wet and dry sandpaper.

What I would advise when working on the fuel pump is tostuffsomething underneath the pump when undoing the bolts as they are a pain if the boltsdrop down under the fuel tank.

Alan, I would advise fitting a completely different pump (Holley, some Facet pumps etc) as even the Stag electronic ones can give trouble. I have always had trouble with these on every car, and I think the original style pump is just a bad design. A bit more hassle fitting but I think its worth it. If you need any help selecting one please come back to me, and I will help you.

PS: I think I will make some kits for better replacement pumps

            Hi

Got recovered home ... a bit of a push uphill to my drive - Stags must weigh a bit (sure someone knows)

Anyway, removed the pump (original from '71) looked inside to find some dirty terminals - a bit of a clean and viola! Able to drive Stag into garage ...

Now shall I just replace contacts (since the pump is working OK) or if I'm doing that should I get an SU kit to do all various bits and bobs or go over to electronic ... ummm?

The first two sound good to me given I'm getting a bit of grief for spending nearly £5K on her in the engine dept ... and also (here is were I cringe a bit) just bought a brand new Citroen C4 Picasso for the wife too ... she likes it and from an obscure point of view I do - in terms of being a bit different .

            Cheers

            Alan

              Many thanks ...

Which one would you recommend? Would I need to fabricate a bracket to fit?

              Cheers

Hi Alan, if you're set on a non SU pump, there is a Facet that comes with an adaptor bracket to fit the Stag.I think Wards do it, give them a bell. Martin.

                    Hi

Many thanks for all the advice.

I called Paddocks and got an SU refurb kit. Decided that if it had been in the car that long - then I should try and keep it original.

Anyway, took it off the car and carefully replaced all the bits and bobs as per the Stag service manual (the photocopy that came with the kit was a bit rubbish!) - set the points as accurately as possible - refitted and it works!

My question is how much fuel should it pump? Whilst the car is idling, the pump is ticking every few seconds - not a regular tick, between two and five seconds I guess. Looking under the bonnet at the fuel filter, a flow of fuel is seen but the filter is not that full of fuel - I've had the car on the drive and allowed it to warm-up and then give the accelerator a press etc ... sounds good no issues but just concerned that not enough fuel is being pumped through ...

Could it be that the fuel filter is at the wrong angle ... it is pointing down (lower end is to the carbs - higher end where the fuel enters) - should it be level?

                    Any ideas or suggestions?

                    Cheers

                    Alan

I've generally found that the Facet type pumps are very noisy compared to the SU type - I had one on my P6 3500 to fix the fuel vapourisation problems they suffered from, and even fitted underneath the car it was obtrusive - behind the drivers right ear in a Stag would be murder!!!

Hi Alan, the angle of the filter doesn't matter, nor does the level, mine changes if there's an R in the month. The ticking you describe sounds about right. If the diaphragmin thepump is OK, you should get about 2 1/2 psi, it really doesn't sound as if you've got a problem - it's called Stag paranoia - I've got it ! Martin.

I'd have to agree that looking at the fuel filter just confuses things. They never run full regardless of the angle or make of car. Best solution is to get a metal one - out of sight out of mind!
I don't think the SU fuel pumps are any worse than any other type. It's just that we're usually comparing a 30 year old SU with some new replacement - how reliable will they be in 30 years.

                            Hi Alan,

Don't know if it is much use now (and I haven't read all the threads) but I had same symptoms and it was the inertia fuel cut off switch - needed a good clean and all was well.

                            Cheers,

                            Andy
