Not sure on how you test the gauge but works by an electriccurrent passing though it from the temperature sender in the head, normally these are more likely to fail than the gauge, I'm sure someone with more electrical knowledge will put you right with testing.

Or you could fit one of these and you'll get a more accurate temperaturereading, and alsohas anoil pressure gauge, not cheap from here but they do come up on ebay

Easy job Russ. Left hand side of engine, at the back just in front of firewall, low down you'll see a hex shaped nut with a wire coming off it...that's the temp sender. Take wire off. Loosen it with a ring spanner or maybe even a long reach socket. You're going to lose (not loose) some water whatever but if you're well prepared and quick you should be able to unscrew it and insert the new one. Tighten it up, reconnect wire and refill car with water..... Does your gauge work at all?

The sender isat the back of the head on the fuse box side on the engine (not sureif classed as LH or RH head can never remember), it's just a case of unscrewing the old one and screwing back the new, some coolant will be lost but if your quick you shouldn't lose to much, can be fiddly to get spanner/socket on but on the whole an easy enough job to do.

Hi Russ, as has been said, it's almost certainly the sender. There is an affordable temperature guage made by TIM, it's about £25, not as good as that nice Smiths dual but accurate, and far better than that useless factory unit. Martin.

Hmmmmm i cant actually remember if ive tried it, ive got a feeling it does work yes.

I take it if its working its indicative of it actually having a thermostat!!!

                          Russ

I'd go for the 150843A. If I were you I'd replace your thermostat as well. I wasn't sure who'd done what to my car so I replaced thermostat, sender and voltage regulator. When you ring LD Parts have a word with Peter about the most appropriate stat. I'm not a MkI owner so not sure if things differ. You'll find Peter extremely helpful and he'll go out of his way to make sure you get it right
