Slight oil leak - where from

    Hi all,

Started the car the other day and once it was warm I noticed some smoke coming from towards the front of the car. I sourced this to something burning off the exhaust.

It looks like I have an oil leak from whatever is next to the oil filter, I couldn't get a close look as I didn't have time. As far as I could tell its only a drip, I still have good oil pressure etc, just its getting oil on the exhaust which is smoking.

1st question is what is the part in question? Is it the oil pump? Its just behind (i.e. closer to the driver) the oil filter and looks like an oil pump cover.

2nd. if it is the oil pump what do I need to replace, what seals do I need etc?

    Cheers

Hi Harve you are correct it is the oil pump there are a couple of 'o' rings inside it and sealing it to the block it may be leaking from here or higher up the engine cam box cover gasket or half moon rubbers it may even be oil from oil filter best idea woul be to clean all oil from these areas give the car a drive round and then see if you can pin point the leak good luck. Clean off the area, let it dry and then dust it with Johnsons baby powder - that will pinpoint the source of the leak more easily where the powder turns brown....

You might also find a small telescopic mirror help in that area as it is difficult to see without it.

Oil transfer cover o-rings? Or maybe the oil pressure sender?

I had exactly this happen on mine and it was the oil pressure sender. Clouds of smoke when in traffic as it dripped straight onto the exhaust manifold:shock: Bought a new sender from Paddocks and they said it is a very fast moving line!

Just replaced oil transfer cover O ring after similar leak, when the ring was removed it was so hard it was like a piston ring.

I also have this problem and got the cream and O rings from LD parts for 75pence but it looks almost impossible to get at without removing the exhaust. Can anyone pleasetell me if it is possible to do without disconnecting the exhaust and are any special tools required.

                        Thanks, Steve

Double-jointed wrists and fingers would be an advantage

It is possible to remove and replace the oil transfer housing without disturbing anything else, but patience is required. Take care when tightening th eoil pressure sender as it is a taper thread into a cast alloy lid. It is easy to crack the casting.

Once removed oil transfer housing also has a small locating lug cast into it ensure this is located in the right position when you put it back on otherwise oil will p**s out every where. Peter
