    Replacement Gearbox

Will finally return to the UK in a couple for weeks to pick up a secondhand gearbox.

Plan to order all I will need to fit this to the car and would appreciate any advice on what other things I will need to do the job. Was told that the Torque Converter was working fine when the box was replaced with a BMW box. Should I also replace the torque converter whilst at it?

    So far my list

New Kickdown Cable, Sump Gasket, Gearbox Oil (how much ?)

Parts are difficult to source out here so I need to buy all I will need to complete this job.

    TIA

Get 5L of ATF then you will have plenty for topping up as parts are hard to source.

Sounds like you have it covered but as you are taking it apart are your UJ's any good?

How good are your gearbox rubber mountings?

And you may want some exhaust gaskets, spare studs and some brass nuts (easier to remove in the future).

I think there is a risk of contamination of ATF fluid if you use the old torque coverter as you cannot drain it.

Have you thought of bringing the Stag over and getting the work done here? If you book it in before you leave, there are probably plenty of places that would do the work for you and no spares problem.

Gearbox capacities are8litres of ATF for the BW35 or 5 1/2 for the BW65.

            Thanks for the advice.

Would love to bring the car over and get it all done but with no reverse gear and some interesting noises at high speed dont know how farI would get

So is the gearbox fited an original Borg Warner or is it a ZF BMW box? If someone has fitted BMW gearbox in the past then you may have problems fitting a standard box using your propshaft, gearbox mounting, oil cooler pipes etc.

If you have a BMW ZF box fitted it may be better to have that fixed or replaced with a similiar box.

Good point Alan. Also the torque converter will be different to the BW types.

Sorry for the confusion, the owner has now fitted a ZF box so I plan to buy the old BW35 box to replace my BW35. Would love a ZF box but out of my current budget I am afraid.

                    Hi

i would also add to your parts list the washers that go with the banjo bolt that fits the dipstick tube to the gearbox.

Good luck they are very heavy to remove by yourself

Are there any gaskets need between the engine and the gearbox torque converter housing?
