high pitched whinning sound

Hi All, I am getting a sort of high pitched whinning sound when doing around 50 miles per hour and over it stops when I ease off the throttle, I think it may be coming from the n/s front ( wheel bearing?) or maybe the diff?( hope not) .

Can anyone help please?.

The worst whining sounds usually come from the passenger seat Sukhi
(I know its an old one, but its early morning for me )


Whining at certain speeds suggests diff, but could be a gearbox whine too. I didnt notice when I rode in your car though did I?

Hi Chris, no it was not there then was it? it happened on monday and to day whenI drove the car to work, 50 mile round trip. I will checkoil levels in the first instance at lunch time then take it from there.GroanI was hoping to have a fault free summer.

If it appeared suddently its more likely something simple like a belt, maybe the PAS or alternator? Alternators can make a sort of whistling noise sometimes, also possibly the pAS pump.

At the risk of being technically helpful which is a rare occurance, spray some WD40 on the belts - worked wonders for me.

Thanks for the advice checked belt tensions looks ok, will spray some wd40 for good measures anyway. Box oil semms a bit low, can it be filled through the dipstick hole as a temp measure until i am safely home from work?.

I forgot you have an auto. They are filled via the dipstick anyway.

It could also be the bearings in the viscous coupling, although this (in my experience) is more like a deep grumbling vibration. Last time mine went it happened suddenly.

hmmm, Interesting, thats what it actually sounds like, any idea how one could be certain, any tests I can carry out to be sur of this.....

VC can be spun to see how freely it spins also grab 2 opposite blade and see it there is any lateral movement. If there is it is shot.

When mine went recently (after being on the car for 2 days) it happened very sudenly . The noise was aweful and very difficult to tell where it was coming from. Resonance is a funny thing.

Thanks Darren, Will try it out tomorrow and see if it is the VC .."Resonance is a funny thing.".. you are right there. It is an awful noise and hard to pinpoint. The noise is worse then a lonesome feral cat crying.:X

Hi Sukh

This high pitch whine will be you quill shaft bearing on the way out or the diff crown wheel is heavily worn, however as it has just come on I would almost garantee the first item to be at fault especially if you have a leaking diff nose seal?

Easy ish job if you have trolley jacks and some help when reinstalling.
