    Engine & Gearbox Mounts

Hello. Just completed the list of parts required to sort my 1972 Stag. I am going to order all that is required but before I doI thought I would check I am getting the correct parts. My brain cell is a bit confused about the Engine and Gearbox mounts. My Stag has a 2.5 PI Engine and Gearbox. Looking at the Engine Mounts they look like ones fitted to the Stag but when I look in the Stag parts manual there seems to be a difference between the Left and Right Mounts but the ones as fitted to my carlook the same both sides. Could someone confirm what Mount this is.

As always many thanks for any replies. Don Kennedy

Also theGearbox Mount is different to the Stag, there is a picture of the Mount and apicture of below the car. Looking at the crossmember the two holes are not level but the mount holes are, is the Gearbox Mount correct as it may need to be slightly "twisted" for thr 2.5 Gearbox to fit in the Stag.

Take no notice of the water drips. I have just pressure washed underneath to make thing cleaner.

Sorry for three posts, One day I will work out how to send more than one picture.

        Hi Don

Can't help with engine mounts, but could they be TR6? The gearbox mount definately looks like a 2000 / 2.5 one. If you buy a new one buy the BL spec job from Chris Witor - they work and last as long as the originals, although they are more expensive. Hope this helps.

Many thanks Brian. Yes the Gearbox Mount is from a 2.5.
There still seems to be some confusion about the Engine Mounts. Manuals show Stag Mounts are different for each side, can anyone please confirm that the Mounts shown in the picture are from a Stag and what is the difference each side as the ones fitted to my car look the same.

          Many thanks, Don Kennedy

Looks like a stag mount to me. Picture of my spare below.

The difference between the two part numbers is that one side has a void in the rubber (as your pic)and the other side is solid. I am not sure that the voided ones are available.

              Hi Redstag,

Very many thanks, looks the same to me. Now I am sure, I can order with the other stuff, only a few more weeks then a week off work and get this Stag even better. I am very pleased with how the car is improving and now I have tamed the P.I. system it is starting to drive very well.

                Hi Don,

If you ignore the effect gravity has by putting the engine weight vertically down on the mounts, there is another force at work. This is the rotational force caused by the natural 'rock' given to the engine when it starts and at other times when it is revved.

It is my understanding that because one mount is therefore slightly compressed and the other stretched by this movement, then Triumph decided to tailor-make each mount to take these two different forces. Hence one has a void and one is solid.

As Pete says, I believe you can now only get one type and it probably makes little or no difference anyway.

                    Hi Ray.

Many thanks, makes sense to me. Time to get out the card and part with some money. Shame I cannot get everything from one supplier. Looks like Chris Wittor and LD Parts. I know there is a supplier ( R*****Rs ). I'm sure that they are very nice people and their mothers love thembut past experience makes them last on the list as I have never had a good experience with them and have never been impressed with the quality. The main problem is getting the gearbox mount from a Stag supplier. The joys of a none-standard car.

                    Don Kennedy.

May be of interest to someone. I always like to give feedback whenever possible. The mountings shown are correct for a 2.5 straight six engine and gearbox fitted to a Stag. The rear mounting is from a 2.5 saloon and estate. The engine mountings are for a Stag and some TRs. The confusion was the engine mountings, some were/are as fitted on some Stags different on each side. The ones with the “slot” in them are available and are also fitted to some TRs. As with many things there is an “art” to fitting. Remember this relates to a TS6 ( Triumph straight six ) engine. Gearbox mounting easy, support gearbox, undo two bolts through crossmember/mounting. Undo bolts holding crossmember to chassis, drop down crossmember, undo two bolts holding mounting to gearbox. As all the good books say assembly is reverse of above. Engine mounts easy if you do so in the correct order. Support engine, preferably in front of the crossmember. Start on the left ( nearside ). Undo/remove two bolts holding rubber mounting to chassis. Undo/remove four bolts holding main metal engine mount bracket to engine, remove the mount complete with rubber mount. Remove rubber mount from main mount, fit new rubber mount, fit assembly back onto engine, do not try to refit two bolts holding rubber mount to chassis. Do the same on the right side but you will need to remove the air/filter and bracket for the air intake ( if 2.5 P.I. ) and the power steering pump bracket. Make sure you loosen the front bolts of the power steering pump so it can move the pump enough to remove the bracket. Unsure if this is normal but on my engine the left side had bolts, the right side had studs with nuts. Remove main engine mount bracket complete with rubber mount, fit new rubber mount refit main engine mount bracket to engine. You need to now align the holes on each rubber mount with the bracket on the chassis. Careful and gentle up and down with the jack holding the engine from below while aligning the two holes on each bracket on each side. This may/could take a while but can be done. I tried other ways before finding this is the best method, fitting the two bolts through the rubber mount to chassis first then trying to fit main engine mount bracket is very difficult ( impossible ? ). I am sure that there are others who have done this a different way but this worked for me. Hope this helps someone.

                      Don Kennedy.

P.S. Many thanks to Chris Witor for his help and excellent and speedy service.
