Oil Change (Gearbox and rear Axel)

    Hi, I have just checked my Haynes manual as I want to attempt an oil change in my MK1 Manual gearbox and also my rear axel/diff. Although I now know where the drain plugs are and also the level plug on the gearbox I could do with the following advice;
    • Which oil (for both) do you recommend.
    • Do you fill the gearbox with new oil until it overflows?
    • How do you fill the real axel/diff and again how do you know when it is full?
This main seem simple stuff but I am still finding my way.

Just started going out for the first time in the Stag and cannot believe the amount of smiles and comments I get!! Isn't it great to drive a car that makes people smile when you pass!!

    Hi Martin

The ROM states Hypoid 90 for our climate for both Final drive and Gearbox.

Fill the gearbox until it starts to overflow also same for diff which has a level bolt on the drivers side of the diff.

Whilst under there clean the breather on the diff.

Just one brief point, when gearbox and diff start to overflow, making certain the car is level, allow the excess to run out before you put the plugs back in. so piles of newspaper and/or drain tray are the order of the day, over-filling either onecanlead to serious problems in the future, enjoy. Martin.

Where is the breather? And how best to clean?

            Hi Martin,

On top of the differential backplate (the alloy bit) you will find a split pin (510408) in a hole. Just the head of the split pin is visible (you will need a torch). Wipe it free of muck and jiggle it about to ensure it is free in the hole. This provides for a release of pressure as the temperature rises whilst driving. Otherwise the quill-shaft oil seal can blow.

If you jack up the rear and take the o/s wheel off, i think this is the best way to see it

Your chances of seeing it are negligable, but you can feel it, Dave's pic shows exactly where it is, it's funny that he tells you to jiggle it, 'cos it's called a jiggle pin. If it remains blocked for any length of time, the pinion and drive shaft oil seals will leak, they're not designed to withstand pressure. It's an 'orrible dirty cheaplittle split pin, but that's what British car makers used thenand if kept loose, it does work. Enjoy cleaning your fingernails. Martin.

Done mine today, Baz is right take the wheel off you will see it, spray some engine degreaser on it and clean it (easy to reach out to ) then work the pin up and down with a pliers, I just used my fingers, it was not that bad. When it came to filling up time.............it was...............

.......wait for it..........it was bone dry ( Groan )Like my self if there are any newbies out there with first time purchase Stags...Please in the first instance check all the vital fluids, I wish someone from the Forum will take some time out and kick me up the rear end.........................remember my last cry for help that I have a whinning noise commimg from somewhere, well this must be it, wonder what kind of damageit has done ( double groan ).:X

Does anybody suggest any oil additives to the gearbox or trans i.e. Molyslip etc?

                      Hi Martin,

Maybe OK in Diff but definitely not in an OD gearbox. The OD clutches don't like Molyslip.

                        HI All

Here's a quick tip for checking the level in Diff & Gearbox, bend a tie tag 90 degrees and use it as a dip stick!
