Steering wheel shimmer

Just a quick question, what makes a steering wheel shake above 60mph? You cant feel it through the car and some times its not there. It could be a road surface that triggers it offer and when you have your hands the wheel, you can still read your watch.

I have new tyres and all joints were new on suspension a year ago and a good source.I have had a quick look tonight and there is sideways play at the bottom of the steering column and you can make it knock if you move it quickly. I haven't been able to test the bottom steering u/jbut thought i would ask in case thisis a red herring.

I think Snakeyreferred to these u/js when a topic was brought up about vibration as a higher speed.The car is running in, so I cant go fast enough to see if I can drive through it, but its there at 75.

I am taking the car down to Devon soon, so wont have time to do anything, but any ideas would help console the annoyance on thejourney down.

I have checked tyres pressuresand will take the wheels off and swap them over and then see if that cures it.To be honest, its not that bad, just niggling.

Hi Andrew.

Sounds to me like wheel balance, but you have new tyres. If you have original Stag alloys, these have been known to suffer from mysterious balancing problems due to poorly centered stud holes. Changing front to back may eliminate the problem as a slightly out of balance wheel on the back won't be so noticeable. Some places still have the capability to balance wheels on the car, which should eliminate the problem, but it will be necessary to mark a stud to ensure that the wheel goes back on in the same orientation if removed.

Make sure you get it fixed before venturing down to Devon. We have enough old dodderers wandering around our roads without adding to the problem with a shaky Stag

hi andrew, i personally would get rid of the red herring, i find proper u/j's are more long lasting than fish.

Andrew I have had this very same problem since I bought the car nearly two years ago .After changing nearly every joint on the suspension and spending a fortune on on wheel balancing both on and off the car I finally discovered the problem was a slightly buckled wheel

Don't worry Dave, I willstill be able to go past caravans.

I will take wheels off and check the nuts and re tighten and thendo as suggested and put the fronts on the back
