charging or not

:?just been getting my wifes stag ready for mot and noticed that ign light was on !rev to about 3,5k and it goes out .at tickover its on and gauge shows up 12v rev as afore it will be 14/15 v i geuss this means alt is us although it shows as charging it has not been used all winter.ive got a spare but was just hoping it might of been some thing silly and easy fix....................cheers steve....................

Hi Steve

What con'd is the battery as I had a problem recently which turned out to be the battery not the alternator!

If you have a multimeter you can check both the alternator and the battery.

If I remember correctly the battery should read 14.5V with the engine running and with the multimeter set on ohms and the black on the battery neg and the pos wire on the alternator casing it should ready less than 0.2 ohms.

I hope I have remembered it correctly but will search for the old post now!

If you do have to change the alternator, don't forget you can get it outfrom above, unbolt the steel front water pipe from the front cover, and it will push out of the way, much much easier, especially if you have the auto trans oil cooler. Martin.

:Xwell found its alt, thats u/s after the afore mentioned tests so will be swapping with good spare. cheers guys.
