    BW35 Refilling.

The book says check the level of the ATF with the engine running. I have just drained and refilled mine (only about 4 pints of fluid came out - I assume the rest is still in the torque converter). At the moment the level is on the minimum mark on the dipstick - I haven't started the engine yet - still putting it back together:?

I just want sufficient fluid in the box for it to work but don't want to overfill it. I will check the level as per the manual once the engine is running again.

So where do I fill it up to initially?

Roger, its filled through the dipstick, pull thefuel inertia switch-disconnect a wire from the coiland turn it over about 20-30 times, this should work the oil about and get rid of any air blocks that may of occured, as it states it should be measured after been for a short run then sat idling

      Hi Roger

It won't hurt the box at all to run for a bit with low fluid - that would only have been an issue if you had rebuilt it and it was dry.

Turning the engine over on the starter has virtually no chance of shifting fluid through the box front pump - you'd burn your starter out first.

Best advice is leave it until you are ready to run the engine properly and do the gearbox level then - just stick a label on the box dipstick to remind you.

        Cheers

I have put about 7 pints back in to get the level on the dipstick. Once I've sorted the heater control valve out I can fill the cooling system up with water and give it a try

I'll re-phrase what i said, turn it over in bursts of 10, surely this would'nt burn the motor out as i'm sure many of us have had problems with starting and tried to turn it over more.I was told by astag mechanic to do this when i tried to refill and could'nt getthe quantityback in because there was an airlock, it worked for me.
