Are you sure there is no oil pressure; or could it just be a failed oil pressure switch?

(if you have an early model car with the two circuits combined).

How do you know there is no oil pressure, do you have a gauge? If you dont have a gauge my first check would be the oil pressure switch and or electrical connections.

If you have a gauge then I would check the oil pump and it's drive shaft. You don't mention any noises heard on start up, a mechanical failure usually occurs at the same time as the expensive noises start.

        Hope this helps!

        regards,

        Raoul

You say you have a gauge - was the loss of pressure sudden/instant or gradual?

If sudden, the first item I suppose would be the quill shaft from the distributor.....it may have snapped, or the oil pressure relief valve stuck open.

If gradual, it could be the oil filter breaking up and clogging itself or sludge coming loose and blocking the pickup strainer in the sump - the main problem is you haven't got many chances to check it as every time you start it to see if pressure's back, and if not, you are damaging the bearings........

The loss was sudden one min driving light came on looked at gauge no pressure.

I have 4 branch manifold this will have to come off to get to oil pump.

              Hi Paul,

You shouldn't need to take off the manifold - I've got 4-branch manifolds, and I've replaced my pump in the past with no problem.

old pump off manifold still in place. is there any way to test it or just replace it.

                  thanks

Hi Paul you can strip it down and check the clearances according to the manual but thats about it what is the condition of the hexzagonal from the dizzy check to see if its rounded itself off. Peter

You need to inspect everything, the oil filter, pump/relief valve and quill shaft to see why you have lost pressure so suddenly.

On other engines i have worked on I always test oil pressure by using a power drill to turn the pump before I start the engine. To do this (after first refitting the pump) you will need to remove the distributor and find something that will fit the quill shaft.

Just another thought; have you checked to see if there is a breakage in the T-adapter that feeds the pressure gauge and pressure sender (I suppose there would be oil all over the place in that case)?

                        Hi Paul,

Just a thought, but I rebuilt an engine several years ago and suddenly 'lost' all oil pressure whilst on the shakedown test drive. It turned out to be a sliver of PTFE tape had disloged and blocked the feed to the pressure gauge. Nearly sh*t myself, but was delighted when I found the problem.

Hope yours turns out to be something simple.

                          Hi all

thanks for all theadvice. I have managed during the day to remove and replace the pump and all back together working ok.

                              What was the problem?
