    Water pump cover

    Hi all,

My water pump cover is badly corroded where the hoses connect so I want to replace it. Looking at Rimmers website I notice there are 2 covers available - 6 or 12 vane. Is there a way of telling which I need without taking it off and counting the vanes? The one I have now has a long number stamped on it and Stanpart P8M. Is that a subtle clue?

    Cheers,

    Bob.

Have a look at this thread and the link in it.

        Hi all,

I followed the link Kevin posted above which told me STANPART PBM stamped into the top of the cover means I have a 12 vane pump, so ordered the new cover from Paddocks. Went to fit it today and when I took off the old one, lo and behold I have a 6 vane pump so the new cover doesn't fit!!!!

Presumably this isn't a hard and fast rule!

The day wasn't all lost though - repaired my siezed heater control valve as per Kingpin's trick in the mag from a couple of month's ago and it works a treat now.

        Cheers,

        Bob

Had a quick look at Paddocks website and it looks like they only do a 12 vane cover - can anyone tell me where I can order a 6 vane cover?

          Cheers,

          Bob.

I'm really sorry about that, I only posted that link as I remembered seeing it originally.

I'm sorry that you were mislead.

No probs Kevin - not your fault, I blame British Leyland!

Trouble is I'm having trouble finding someone selling the 6 vane variety. Robsport are advertising an original one but they want 50 quid

                Hi Bob,

Have you tried the usual s/hand sources: Martin at Justriumph, Les Clark, Sebastian at DoaStags? First two are ebay regulars, the last has an advert in the spares section of the magazine every month.

Bob - tried to do my heater valve the other day using the same method - but I could not get a longer replacement screw for love or money!

Where did you source yours - my screw is so small, I can't believe the thread will take any leverage, the photos in the magazine must have been very magnified or have I been misled?

Also what diameter tube - I intended to use a socket?

Thanks Stuart - I notice the small outlet at the front of the cover points upwards - mine points horizontally towards the front of the car like the one below it (as does the 12 vane cover) - does this matter? I guess I might need a different hose.

                        Cheers,

                        Bob.

                          Hi Ian,

Yes the screw is surprisingly small isn't it! LikeyouI couldn't find a screw which had exactly the same thread either, but eventuallyfound one which was nearly the same, and about 1.5 inches long, and just screwed it in 1 turn until it started to stiffen up. This gave enough purchase to draw out the valve but didn't screw so far in so as to damage the thread - I guess it was a bit of a risk but it worked OK, and the old screw went back in OK, so I got away with it.

                          Good luck!

                          Cheers,

                          Bob.

                            Hi Ian,

I managed to do my heater valve a week or so ago pretty much the same way as in the magazine article. My biggest problem was removing the screw in the first place. I ended up cutting a slot in it. The thread is small and I was also sceptical about it pulling out. My method was to screw a long screw in, using a socket as a tube with a suitable washer. I then found a nut with the same thread and "undid" the nut against the washer to pull the valve out - this way there was little risk to the thread in the valve. Even though the valve seemed to be seized solid it came out suprisingly easily, once it was out about 1/4" it was easy to pull put the rest of the way.

I found a longish screw in my tray of "small bits". I've just checked the thread and it is a UNC thread - 32 TPI (teeth per inch) 0.138" diameter - I believe it is referred to as a 6-32 UNC. This is not to be confused with a 5/32" whitworth thread - this is fractionally larger diameter and will not fit.

I found these on eBay but they are not very long.

Thanks for the replies and help, I've re-filled with new anti-freeze now so it'll have to wait a while - but at least I can keep my eye open for a suitable screw now I know the size!
