    Petrol Smell

    Hi Folks

Every time I put the stag away there is a smell of petrol for about 30 min after I switch off . Its not coming from the boot or any of the feedpipes but does seem to come from the carb overflow pipe which has a damp end although not dripping . I have replaced the float needles and checked and reset the floats but to no avail. When I switch on again after the smell has gone the pump clicks untill it has topped up the carbs again . Any one any ideas

Interesting to note that in the history for my car, such that it is, (it took me several days to assess, sort and present the paperwork supplied in toa presentable history file!) several of the previous owners have complained of afumey (?) / petrol-type smellfrom the car when garaged! Never found, and still does it 35 years later despite having carbs. overhauled and much other work done which was intended to erradicate the smell!

It cannot be too serious as there is no visible sign of leakage and fuel consumption appears normal! I would be interested to know the answer, if you find it on your car?

      Regards, John

Isn't it normal for this to happen to some degree?

I always thought the float chambers were vented to atmosphere so when you stop the engine the fuel in the carbs tends to get hot and evaporate through the vent / overflow pipes.

          Pete,

yes, I would think so. I am more used to SU carbs than Strombergs (Spitfire, 1600E Weber then Rover V8's) but fuel in the float chambers has to do something, I guess.

          Regards, John.

p.s. My first car, a 1966 Triumph Spitfire, parked on the steep drive of my parent's house, lost 4 gallons thro' the leaking needle valve of the float chamber (over-night) - Big block of ice around the carb!
