My 1974 stag is a runner, no starting or overheating problems but uses lots of oil, honest opinion needed from a good mechanic - anybody know of a good stag experienced one in south yorkshire? The car is an old restoration so bodywork (white) and interior (red) good, nice usable car and even better if sort the oil problem out.

A few questions,
How much oil is it using?
Do you have oil smoke in the exhaust? Constantly or on the overrun?
If you take the oil cap off can you see oil smoke or vapour, and does it "pulse" with the engine running?
Have you pulled the sparkplugs to see if one or a few of them are oily?
Do you have any evidence of oil leaks on your driveway? If so where in relation to where the front wheels were parked. If you can answer some of these questions we may be able to save you a few quid at garage.
regards,
Raoul

Hello Raoul
If full on the dipstick before a drive, after 50 miles the oil has dropped quarter of an inch.
Definitely oil smoke from the exhaust, I've not had chance to follow but in the rear mirror more smokeon acceleration (could this be the fuel?)
Re oil cap smoke/vapour - haven't tried this yet, would this be leaking through valve stem?
Yes all the spark plugs are oily
No oil leak (from engine at least)
No knocks and rattles from engine, sounds lovely

Your forum name says it all doesn't it
I tend to agree with Stuart. Sounds like excessive piston wear. If so the only cure is a strip down and either new ringsor are-bore, depending on measurements.
I hope someone can come up with an easier solution, but I have my doubts. Can you get compression readings?

If you can carry out a compression test and post the results it will help us confirm the diagnosis. It's very easy to do at home after you've bought or borrowed the compression tester. Just post again and ask for help if you're not sure.
If you are going to have to carry out a recon of the block, crankand pistons you may as well do your heads at the same time, I think it would be false economy to only do half the engine.
As we say "Down Under" all problems go away,if youthrow enough dollars at them! Look on the bright side, it's a lot cheaper to do in the UK than it is on my side of the world!

Thanks Raoul, I have something to work on now, it's nice to get some advice from experienced people (being a 'beginner' myself). I've had the car a few months and it always puts a smile on my face, having decided in the seventies (as a kid) when my uncle had a brand new stag that when I grew up I was going to get one - it's taken a while

I wouldn't describe myself as an experienced car mechanic. On this forum, I bow to Russ's knowledge and experience when it comes tomatters automotive. I read hisreplies and think how the **** does he know that?
I'm a Mechanical Aerospace Engineer, and just try to cross discipline my experience. It's all "suck, squeeze, bang, blow" in reality!
Good luck with your engine rebuild.

Raoul
