    Lower Steering Column Bush

    Hello All

Quick question. Has anyone replaced the lower bush on the steering column with the steering column in place? I appreciate that it may be not that accessible, but with the u'j out of the way and the circlip off, surely it can all be coaxedout?

Any comments and experience much appreciated

    Cheers

    Andrew

    Hi Andrew

    Why?

It only takes 15mins or so to remove the column so why go to the hassle of try to do the job in the engine bay?

I will be doing this job tomorrow so will let you know how long it takes.

      Hi Stuart

Haven'T done it before, so removing the column sounds a bit daunting with all the switches etc or are we talking about just removing the inner shaft?

I have done a few TR columns and they were agro

Good luck tomorrow and I would be interested to hear how you got on

      Cheers

          Hi Andrew,

Not too difficult, as Stuart says. Did mine a few weeks ago. Just match mark the clamp at the top of the lower steering column against the upper column to make sure you put it back in the same place and don't upset the steering alignment. Then release that clamp, as well as remove the bolt just inside the bulkhead at the base of the column.

Remove the three bolts that secure the steering column clamp to the dashboard. Separate the three electrical connector blocks in the wiring and it all comes out. There is a countersunk screw at the base of the column. Remove this and you should be able to tap the outer column up to reveal the lower bush. Replacement of that is fairly self-explanatory.

Hardest part is aligning the upper column back onto the lower column, which seems as if it needs two pairs of hands, but can be done with a bit of juggling.

Should have it all done in an hour. Mine took a bit longer as I had to remove the wiring loom cover to run a sensor wire to the ignition lock for an immobiliser. This meant dismantling the steering column clamp.

Thanks Dave, I can now appreciate that it comes away as a larger unit rather that stripping it all down.Well explained.

By the way, enjoyed the sunny Devon weather and Stag didn't miss a beat although mixture needs sorting as there isn't much pull with new engine and only noticed this on the longer run at my now aloud higher revs. must be weak as on a steady incline, the temp went up to just under half from a quarter. There were a few time with 4 up that I wanted to pass someone and there wasn't enough umph to get past in time.

            Much appreciated

I found the only difficult bit of reasemblywas getting the splined end of the column into the splined socket on the universal joint on my own ,with 2 people it would be easy.

                  Cheers Steve

I have just taken mine apart to get the new bulkhead insulation pad in place, and then put back together again.
I found it to be a doddle, especially with no engine and no windscreen in - you can stand in the engine bay and reach through to manouver the steering wheel:P:P:P
