    Power steering pump noise?

Probably a stupid question, but what does a noisy power steering pump sound like? I have what I can only describe as a high pitched, high frequency rattle/whirring soundfrom the pump when the engine is taken above idle.Usinga listening stick I am sure it is the pump - I had thought of the timing chains but they have only done 5k:?Has anyone come across this?

Brian - hoping that my timing chains are OK!!

If you squirt some WD40 on thePS pulley bearing when it's running does it still persist?

You are describing one of the many types of PAS pump noise - worth looking back at an old thread for possible remedies - loose pipes can cause more than hiss.....

Yes, some of the belts make quite a noise dont they, but more of a squealy noise than metallic.

Thanks for the speedy replies guys - I've just removed the belt and run the engine (why didn't I think of that earlier?) and, hey presto, no whirring noise. :shock:It may be a coincidence that I put a new return hose on last week!

Thanks for the advice, I was paranoid that it was my tining chains:X

            Hi Brian,

I think my pump is also making the same noises.

What did you do to remedy it?

I've a spare pump sitting around in good working order if you need one. It had a slight weep from where the neck meets the body whichI sealed and was used for a few thousand miles with no further problems.

It's usually an air leak on the return side of the hydraulic pipes from the rack Al - it sucks in air and it's the air bubbles that make the noise

                  All sorted

The 'noise' was the alternator fan/pulley catching on the jubilee clip and bottom hose:shock:

I have a bracket that fits on the metal part of the pipe and had that bolted to a bolt on the timing cover, but was obviously the wrong one as it pulled it too close to the alternator.

Which bolt does it attach to??

                    Al,

This pic shows where mine is bolted to.

                    Hope it helps.
