This Stag Is Gonna Give Me a Heart Attack

Took the air filter off the Stag at the weekend to re-tighten the inlet manifold bolts after the head replacement, job done no problems.

Changed the oil and filter tonight and took the car for a spin around the block, pulled onto the drive and the car struggled to tick over. Lifted the bonnet and I could hear what can only be described as a "swishing" noise from the middle of the engine. First thoughts were its the water pump but why would that effect the tick over? Anyway took the air filter off with engine running blocked of vac pipes where they came off the air filter no change in noise.

Switched off engine removed cam covers to check oil supply all Ok. Re fitted air filter and cam covers started up engine, noise gone:?Tickover still lumpy though, took the car round the block again, Vac gauge not reading correctly, showing "accelerating" all the time, checked vac pipes and found pipe off the air filter box. replaced pipe and tick over has improved however when revving the engine revs droplow momentarily when foot is taken off throttle. Vac gauge is showing idle at tick over but is a little erratic. Question is what was the swishing noise and where was it coming from? It could have been the vac pipe sucking but cant help worrying its something else. Took the car for another run up the local bypass, 70mph and running cool so if anything was gonna go it probably would have gone then, engine now sounds fine on tickover but Im still worrying. Any ideas before I worry myself into an early grave?

Been out and had another listen with the car in the garage and I reckon the "swishing" noise is the pressure relief valve on the power steering pump and the lumpy tickover was down to the vac pipes but being paranoid and combining the two problems together got me really worried.

Slight increase in revs causes the power steering pump to "swish" is this normal?

Have'nt got a clue Davebut if you manage to get over we can compare sounds and annoy the neighbours with the roar of twin V8s

        Hi Baz

Might make it over tomorrow night, really desperate to drive the Stag and check it out. Good idea about comparing sounds.

          1. The Stag can only give you a heart attack if you drop it on your chest

          2. Don't give yourself a heart attack; there is already an acute shortage of stag owners at the moment (too many unloved Stags looking for caring owners).

          3. ........ and there might be a shortage of 'problems' on this forum for me to ponder (they do seem to have dwindled lately). I know I should get a life.

Now your problem: A leak in the breather (or vacuum hoses) could cause both a noise, and a poor idle.

The power steering system can cause low idle speeds by loading up the pulley when you turn the wheel, but if you werent doing that, its hard to imagine how that could be the cause.

          Keep us posted.

            Hi V

Thanks for the reply and the concern over my cardiac state. I think I had two problems or three if you count being paranoid as well.

Firstly I think I had a leak on the vac hoses after refitting the air filter, secondly the swishing noise was coming from the steering pump as I increased the revs to compensate for the poor idle. Vac hoses now sorted but steering pump still makes a swishing noise at anything above idleing speed. Going to nip round to Bazstags to compare noises before making any decisions about the steering pump.

Will be interested in your Weber carb kit when its finished.

            Cheers

            Dave

Russ (Kryten) has previously posted a solution on some similar symptoms. A hissing noise in the power steering pump can be caused by a leak in the return pipe. If it is loose or holed it will suck in air.

              Just a thought.

                Hi Dave

I have exactly the noise which you describe from my power steering pump too...tightening / replacing hoses has not cured it so maybe its on its way out

                  Dave,

Whilst getting paraniod about leaks on my car tonight I had a listen to my power steering pump. Its silent at tickover (650-700rpm). But anything over 1000rpm it makes a hissing/swishing noise. The one on my Land Rover - different pump but same principle, does the same. I personally think it is just the noise it makes as the fluid circulates.
