One good piece of news from my drive this evening is that the diff has stopped dropping oil. (and yes it has got some in it). Ever since I've had the car its always deposited a small quanitity of oil after every run. I finally got around to checking it out at the weekend and found the breather hole caked in oily crud. I dug it all away and washed it off as best I could and got the split pin free again. Then topped up the level - which was well down - it took just over a litre of oil:shock:, since then not a drop has leaked out.
I should have realised sooner as I had a similar issue on my Land Rover a while ago, a constantly weeping pinnion oil seal - again due to a build up of pressure in the diff caused by a blocked breather. Why couldn't B.L. come up with a reliable way of letting their axles breathe????

Now Stagless but have numerous car projects
So many cars, so little time!
Same problem I had Roger, Done what you did and topped up with loads of diff oil, the low pitched droning sound I got from the rear prompted me to check the oil level and clear the breather.
The sound is still there so not really sure at the moment as to what to do, it was suggested that the Quill shaft bearing was shot so I have got one and an oil seal. But others have said it is not the bearing, so I have decided to remove the diff after summer and have it rebuilt....any advice will be appreciated,....the joke was about BL and not our beloved Stags

The drone is definitely the diff nose extension bearing guaranteed I have had 3 of them go over the last 26 years!
Does take long to do if you have the parts just replace and see for yourself at least it's one more thing off the list!
