    Hole in front chassis leg

I have discovered a hole in my front chassis leg, directly above where the suspension crossmember bolts to it:X Has anyone else had this, and is it a case of plating it in the normal way? The flitch panel (I think it is called that!) is in the way a little it seems. Hope it doesn't need a complete new leg...Any advice appreciated!!

    Hi Brian,

Is this the area you mean?

I just cut away the part of the flitch panel that was in the way, made the repair to the leg then made a new section for the bottom of the flitch panel. If yours is anything like mine the rust will have got to this bit anyway, so no point trying to work around it.

There are some pics of similar corrosion on Favershams website.

had exactly the same on mine - it was only in the outer panel - was able to cut out the rot in the outer panel and weld in a patch with a few plug welds as well. mine was not too bad - sure yours will not be either. I reckon it is common - the design is lousy and just traps the moisture - plenty of waxoyle once you have done it.

Had the same on mine I think, just above the chassis rail but only a very small area, trouble is there is three layers of steel there I had to repair two layers and the resulting welding burnt the paint on the engine bay side. I made some repair sections and repaired one layer and coated it in weld through primer before welding in the outer layer. Been fine now for around 10 years.

Ah...so its not just my car then! Thanks very much for the replies, especially the photos which show clearly the sort of problem I have. Stag paranoia set in and I was visulaising a complete new chassis leg - and lots of pound signs!!! I'm confident now to carry out a repair in the way which you all suggest, although it does seem a little tricky. Many thanks again

I had same problem, hole in bottom of chassis leg covered by subframe and outer suspension turret had parted company from the chassis leg. The metal used is quite thick and corrugated, I ended up making a die to form the metal in a vice, about 2" high. I also removed the inner turret metal plate soI could weld inside as well. Not much fun.

Another place to check the chassis leg is under the floor near your feet, the "top hat" section is welded to another, if bubbling around the join will probably find rusting between the two and parting company.
