    Electrical woes - Alternator U/S??

Put a previous post about my alternator seeming to overcharge, consenscus seemed to be that it was not sensing the battery charge and could be the alternator - U/S.

Not that I'm a cheapskate but I thought, take it off, check and clean all the terminalsin case its a poor connection and try again (I know I must be MAD - I keep forgetting this is a Stag!), done this (did replace the anti-roll bar rubbers at the same time - 1 job done), kicked it up and now I've no Ignition light (was there before) and the voltmeter is currently sitting at 12.5 volts - making me wonder whether its charging at all? Haven't got a voltmeter or anything technical - so stumped.

Daren't risk it for Drive it day (got 100 ml round trip to outlaw's christening) and don't know whether the alternators gone or whether its something else?

Mk1.5/Early Mk 2Stag with (I think) 18ACR alternator inbuilt regulator and three wire "plug" at the back - but I did find another brown wire, in the same area - all taped up. Re-taped this and left alone - but now I'm really stumped.

Anysuggestions appreciated - oh and I've already though of setting fire to it, everything I do, 1 job becomes 2, 2 become 3 - is there any end............................................... .................................................. ..................................

Ian, try taking it to Sammy Stones over Gratefield drive (off sutton road) he will be able to refurb it quite quickly (not by tomorrow tho!)

Jason - The biggest problem is I'm now not sure it is the alternator! Why have I now lost the warning light, is there something else wrong or is it just co-incidence?

Hopefully Kryten or someone will have a better idea than me?

Ideally you need access to some equipment to measure your voltage, but if you dont have anything, you can check if its charging by using your dash voltmeter.

Check the voltage at ignition switch on. Then check the reading with engine running at 1500 rpm. The reading should go up slightly. Switch on your healights, full beam and see what happens to the volts on your voltmeter. Keep the revs up at about 1500 and check that your volts dont drop. If they do drop you probably have a fault there somewhere.

Thanks for the offer, I'm probably going to replace the alternator anyhow, this all started with what I thought was the guage, it went up to the very top - appearing to be charging over 15 volts and into the red- then stayed there.

Concensus was the regulator mechanism in the alternator was giving up the ghost?

I took it off and cleaned all the terminals etc - and now I've lost the ignition warning light as well. With Maastricht coming up I don't want to take any chances, so I'll try a new alternator and hope that the light comes back then? If not I'll be back on the Forum seeking help. Suppose I ought to order a couple of bulbs and check that as well?

Will let you know how I go on, Les from the Worcs has put me in touch with someone in Studley - he has a reconditioned alternator and will also test mine.

p.s. A44 Service Station were quite sympathetic to my old Stag when they did the tracking - and quite reasonable as well! Worth noting.
