    Repair Costs ?

    Hi There,

Need some advice on resonable costs for a couple of welding jobs needed on my 76 MK2.

I took the tread plates off to reveal a few holes on each side hence why the screws for the tread plates were loose! The inside of the cills appears fine but I have had a quote for £300-£400 to repair for each side, just seems a lot to me.

I also have an hard top which is in pretty good nick, only issue is with one side, the locating lever panel which attaches to the car by the drivers door is rotten. Again a quote of £400 to repair or it was suggested it would be cheaper to buy a good one and get it sprayed.

I live in Worcester so any advice gratefully received.

    Hi Martin,

As with any quote, get a second opinion, and a third. Ask fellow members nearby what they have been charged and where they went.

As for your quotes. The quotes for the sills seem high if it is just welding up a couple of enlarged screw holes, but then there will be paint afterwards which is always expensive. If the damage is limited to the area under the treadplates, you could consider dioing the painting yourself with an aerosol.

The hard top repair is tricky as it is double-skinned and complex shapes. I did it myself a few years ago after getting quoted silly prices to have it done professionally. Finding a good hard top is getting difficult. Expect to pay around £500-£600 for a 'rust-free' one.

Sill repairs are structural, hence under MOT scrutiny. The rules are that welds must be continuous for a sill repair. Another point to bear in mind is that rust is nearly always twice as bad as it looks at a glance. You need to cut away until back to good base metal, and as a result the holes get much bigger.

But get another one or two quotes before deciding.

It's also probably worth finding out what rustproofing your sills contain and telling your welder, most are inflammable, particularly Waxoyl, a ready source of car fires. Martin.

          Alll,

Thanks for your replies, I will definately get some second opinions and costs to see how competitive they are.

As suggested will ask some local members for their views to.

          Thanks again

          Martin
