    Help with choosing oil

Hi its coming up to service time and want to check on what oil to use

should I use synthetic or mineral oil

    I have usually used GTX

but I have been questioned about my choice and wondered if I should start to use the modern Synthetic.

Hiya, even with the SOC discount, the Millers website price is rediculously high, I use Millers Sport semi-synth 20 / 50, it's a superb oil, but I would never dream of paying that price for it. Wards do it at a more affordable amount. Martin.

        Still way too expensive
I use duckhams classic 20/50 --bought some at Stoneleigh for £12.00, prior to that I bought the same thing at Trago in Newton Abbot fot £11.50

Mineral is what you need but not at premium prices

I use Millers Classic Sport 20 - 50 and am very happy with it. Ok, it is a little expensive but I think it is worth it.

I used to use GTX but they don't do a 20/50 any more ( I think it's 15/40 now) Duckhams is now owned by Castrol and I heard that it is in line for the chop, so maybe worth getting some stock in while it's still cheap.

Personally I would carry on using what you have been using. i.e. if you've always used 20/50 mineral stick with it - what ever brand you prefer. I would not change. The reason being that I believe with an old engine (unless it has been very recently totally cleaned and rebuilt) changing the oil type will mean you will inevitably end up pumping a liquid around the engine which contains a different mix of detergents, desludgifiers or what ever they are termed these days etc. My worry with this has always been that the different, and probably more effective, detergents will disturb some of the sludge that has sat quite happiliy in all the nooks and crannies, it will then get pumped around the engine until it gets caught in the filter.

The design of the engine is 40 years old, older style 20/50W mineral oils were designed to work in these engines and the tolerances they were built to. Modern engines are built to much closer tolerances and the oils have changed to suit.

More important, in my book, are regular oil and filter changes. I think frequent (3000-4500mile) changes of a cheap 20/50W are better than putting in a modern, expensive fully synthetic and running it for 20,000miles.

If you really want to change to a synthetic, (and I wouldn't), then do the change, run it for a few hundred miles and then do another oil and filter change to flush out all the c*!p you will have dislodged.

              Just my thoughts

              Roger

                Hi Roger

I switched to Millers Classic 20/50 Sport on the last oil change, I managed to find it at local motor factors for £20 I change my oil and filter every 1500 miles at £24 a go I think its good piece of mind for any paranoid Stag owner.

                      Hi all

                      thanks for all your comments

there seams to be a push towards a semi synthetic as per the Millers classic 20/50

this oil seams a bit high in price on there web site

does any one know of a stockest near Bedfordshire / Milton Keynes?
