    Newbie

    Hi

I joined the SOC at the Bromley pageant much to my wifes consternation as I'm Stagless.....at the moment!

Having sat in a Stag at the impresionable age of 13 at a motor show, I decided then that I must have one.
I bought a white Man O/D around 1985 which I loved & cried over, it cost me a fortune, new engine, respray... it just went on & on.
Finally with the arrival of kids I mistakingly sold her.
But now .....they're older hoorah!!! so I'm going to bite the bullet & buy another hopefully sooner than later although my wife just looks at me with a strange worrying look on her face every time a mention it. I think she wants another one really!
I know what I want, just have to find the right one & the cash!
    I shall keep you posted

Good luck with your search Phil and welcome. I joined the SOC well before I found my Stag. Just kept watching the posts, learning the pitfalls etc and scanning the adverts on the internet. As my wife used to have a crush on Nicholas Ball (Hazel) she too was a very big influence in what car we got. Hope it doesn't take you too long

I too joined before I got a car. In the end I only looked at 3, bought the 3rd one. It was a non runner. But that was because it had been stripped and had engine rebuild, all chrome either new or redone, reupholstered, new brakes & clutch and some other stuff.
The owner had lost his job and had to part with it.
So confident was I that it was going to be fine I booked to go to National in Edinburgh, then extended the break to take in 2 weeks holiday up as far as Loch Ness.
Got car running a month before we were due to leave, (took longer than expected), went for a run to my brothers 40miles away. Set off down M1, eyes glued to temp gauge. Sadly went to the top about 10 miles from destination, then on slip road pressed clutch to change down, nothing. Gotto bros house. Bonnet up. Overtemp was the fan had flexed and dug into (new),radiator.
Clutch, new fangled pipe with nylon centre peice was too near manifold and softened up. When pressure applied, pipe parted.
Sorted fan. Car will start in any gear, so managed to get home with no clutch.
Sorted the problems with days to spare. Did a 20 mile test run with no problems. went on 3 week holiday, got up to Loch Ness, visited Wick, down to Fort William then Edinburgh.
Absolutly faultless, and with a trailer packed with camping gear.
      Welcome back to the adventure!

        Hi Phil

Much the same for me.got one when i was 20, white M/OD,had it as a second car even back then .trouble was i didn't have the use of a garage and it didn't qualify for classic insurance so 3 months cost me £400 ouch.I only had it for those 3 months and it has been like a unfinished part of my life ever since, constantly winding the window down(and my misses up)when we saw another Stag just to get a reminder of that sound:P.Funny enough it was on ebay last year looking very tatty and boasting a genuine 79,000 miles,Strange as it had over 100,000 20 years ago,i did email the seller and tell him (and sent him some pics )but the listing stayed unchanged.

So last year ,Kids older,Garage empty of crap, spare cash & more time on my hands and i got another one, again White M/OD except this one didn't have ripped seats and rust bubbling up along the cill rear panel joint line (Had other problems instead but nothing that couldn't be sorted)

Loved every minute of it dispite costing as much as a new car

Do it ,you know you want to

        Good luck Steve

          Hi Phil,

I think I was the one who persuaded you to join at Bromley, glad your looking and hope to see you at one of the shows in the SE with your Stag soon. Don't forget the Area meetings. The SOC are trying to regenerate the SE London area, but failing that, the Kent area meet at East Malling, not that far for you.

At the meetings, you can meet up with kindred spirits and pick their brains on Stags, that's what I did before I bought my Stag.

Best of luck in your search.

            Hi Phil and Welcome!

Like you my kids have now grown up and after year of wanting a Stag I have finally got one. My good friend owned my stag for 20years and it was his pride and joy and in excellent body and mechanical order, except for the paint which was crazing all over. I took it back to bare metal, etched, primed and painted. Passed MOT first time and now enjoy driving it. Hope you get a Stag soon and keep us all informed.

            Cheers!Terry..
