Stag Estate for sale 4wd ebay 290313829642

Has any body else seen this? I dont think it was one of the Del Lines cars, must be a prototype GKN? Interesting, and a lot of work, but will make a great tax exempt estate for someone!

Good spot, now that would be an interesting project if only I had the time and space oh and bags of money.

The listing quotes the engine as being 3.5-litre, but is definitely a Stag unit :?

The latest Triumph World has an article on one of the two 4WD Stags that were built by FFD. The article also lists the other cars converted by FFD in 1973. They mention 2 Triumph 2.5 (one being a 2.5PI auto estate) and a saloon with Stag 3.0 V8 engine. Nowhere does it list a 3.0 V8 estate, but then these articles and lists are frequently incorrect.

Del Lines did a few 3.0 V8 saloons and estates but not, as far as I know, any 4WD cars.

Interesting project nonetheless, but only for the brave I fear.

I met the owner of this car last year in a pub.
He was taking a look around my stag.
We got talking and he took me to see the car.
He told me that he'd been offered £4000 for the car but the money never materialised.
This was around the time the car was displayed at Stoneleigh so he said.
At the time I saw it, the owner was battling a serious illness and was wondering if he could dispose of the car.

The car was very rough but rebuildable.

The roof & cant rails were very poor an probably mean the shell would soak up the most money.

The car stopped running because the starter broke apparently.....the owner showed me a new starter that he'd bought years ago to fit, but hadnt got around to it!

The car had covered between 60-70 k miles.

        The seats had been stolen.

To put the running gear into another car is not straight-forward, because the body was modified in a number of places, to a surprisingly low standard for a factory (formula ferguson developments) project.

The ex FFD site at Radford Semely is still an automotive site (Ricardo Midlands Technical centre)

We have a 4WD stag owner in our club area and Ive seen the body mods up close.

They would be possible to recreate in a more tidy shell, which imho is what would need doing on this estate car....it certainly reqires a total strip-down.

In any case its a very interesting car, which apparently was used by a triumph director on the Isle of Man for some years before the man I met bought it.

I think it survived because it was not built by Triumph as a 4wd prototype and so did not fall into the scrap-bin policy that automotive manufacturers use.

As it is such an unusual Triumph, it would be nice to see it sell for a song and get preserved to the best possible standard.

I remember seeing this at Stoneleigh a few years back. But I don't remember it being in such a poor condition.

Hopefully it'll sell for a fair price that will allow for a decent restoration

If any one is interested, a friend used to use saloons & estates for banger racing, he stillhas some nice shells and loads of parts stripped out over the years (a shame I know!)

It's sold. Did anyone on here buy it?

I think I would have been seriously tempted if I had anywhere to keep it!

I bought it.I am a stag owner (for 9 years), and I have a TR5 - I don't frequent this forum (sorry) as I am a member of a number of others, and forums seem to take up too much time as it is. i have been a member of SOC for 4 or so years.

I was gently browsing as I wanted to attempt to get in touch with the owner of the 4 by 4 stag to ask if I could "pick his brains" for information on the 4 by 4 system and spares availability etc.

Could anyone point me in the right direction ?

                  regards

                    Hi Mike

Welcome to the forum, you are a brave man buying the 4WD Estate as it will not be an easy job!

Do you live near Ludlow where the car was situated as I live 9 miles form Ludlow?

You need to PM Roger P as he knows the owner of the 4WD Stag.

                      Stuart,

I live in Sutton Coldfield, so not that close.

I did view the car before purchase, so I am under no illusions as to the work required. (Plasma cutter and mig welder to hand!).

I think this will take 2 to 3 years work.

Interesting to find out some more of the history though, and its a broken starter - that helps as I intend to get it running this weekend to evaluate it mechanically.

thank you for the lead to the 4 by 4 stag

                      regards

                      mike

                            Hi Mike,

As far as I understand, the only production cars that the FFD 4wd system was installed on was the Jenson Interceptor FF. Perhaps that would be a good line of inquiry.

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, I think this forum would be very interested to hear how you are getting on with your resto.

                            Good luck!

                            Regards

Hi Congratulations on the purchase, it would be great to see the car reborn.

I believe there are 2 4wd stags (saloons!) in existance, hopefully the owner will be in touch, see this months mag out and about feature and contact James Scott, Birmingham area scottygsxr@googlemail.comwho can put you onto the owner of 1 of them.

I will get in touch with that contact info for spare Saloon parts shortly!

                              Good luck
