    electric water pump

    hi chaps, on my recent meet with the stag boys, a chap at the meeting had an electric water pump fitted to his original stag engine. he said that he has now removed the kenlow as its no longer needed.
    when using the stag even in traffice it never got close to the middle.
    so i have managed to buy an electric pump of an omega.
    gonna fit it this week end. my question is that does the water get pumped to the top of the rad so the water can flow down the rad then comes out of the bottom, to get forced back round the engine?
    i need to know this, so i can pump the water in the right direction.

    Hi Martyn, yes the mechanical pump pushed water through the engine, out of the thermostat into top of radiator where it cools and is sucked out of bottom of radiator by engine (on same principle of hot air rises, cool air falls). However this only happens when the stat is open, when closed the water is circulated through the stat bypass back into the engine.

    Thus Assuming you're fitting the pump outside the engine then you'll need to remove the stat else the pump won't be able to circulate water during warmup (ie when stat is closed)

      If it's the little assist pump, it may not be enough to handle the full coolant flow.

      Lots have done the conversion, indeed I will be doing mine soon and have the full Davies Craig setup with an Audi assist pump for the heater.

      Check out the other threads on the subject before you commit yourself

        I have an EWP fitted and yes it does cool the engine very well but to remove the electric fan is very risky. I was unaware that Omega's had an EWP as a main pump, maybe a heater booster pump. What size are the water connections to the pump you have?

          hi john, the pump connections are eighteen mm. i emailed the guy i bought it off of
          and he said that its the one use on the v6 omega.
          so i guess that it will be man enough to do the job,

                My 'Fagpacket' calculations show a 18mm pipe to have a cross sectional area of 250 mm2 and a 32mm pipe the standaard bore of the stag water cicuit plumbing to be 760 mm2 ie 3 times the area. I think you have an aux pump and it def would not be any good for the main circuit of the stag. It would however be ideal as an aux pump for the heater and bypass circuits when using a Craig davies Main pump. - Alan

                  I think this is more like the pump you would need for the Stag, the one you have is for the heater circuit.

                    sh,,t, better get in touch with the dude, that sold me the pump. was that other one no good then? stu did you give that other one a go? did it work at all?

                      Not mine mate just a pic off the internet. I think it is a Davis Craig one but someone will confirm this?

                        Not sure if that's a Davies Craig or not - my EWP110 doesn't look like that one...

                          It looks like a Davies Craig EWP80. The connection dimensions you gave are for an auxiliary pump.
                          You can get Davies Craig parts from Ward's or MAW solutions, the importer. You will also need the electronic controller. Do you want it to replace the mechanical pump or supplement it?

                              Sorry but I cannot see the little Bosch pump doing much to help the main mechanical pump. If you have overheating problems they should be addressed. Adding a small pump is not a solution. IMHO.

                              Where will you put this little pump?. It will not fit in the main circuit as too small, no point in putting it in the bypass as that is closed when engine is up to temp. Yes it could boost the heater flow but only when the heater is on.

                              I don't want to sound too negative but I cannot see the point.
