what dashpot oil do you all use, i have been using 20/50 for the past couple of years, but at a recent show I noticed someone topping up theirs with 3 in 1 - which got me thinking about what is correct.

Theory says thicker oil should give you a slightly richer mixture when you floor the throttle, too thin and you may suffer fromhesitation? I remember SU will sell you some "straight weight" oil (SAE20?) just for carbs, this stuff apparently "gives the best MPGeconomy" but some peopleare gullable enough to buy anything.
I've heard ofpeople using ATF andRedex. I've tried various grades of engine oilover the years, from 5/50 through 10/30 15/40 and 20/50 and can't say that I've noticed any difference at all.

how do we know if it needs any oil? and if so how do we tell that when putting it in, if its at the correct level.

Marty,
Unscrew the black knob on top of each carb and remove the plunger. The oilshould be level with the top of the inner tube you can see down inside. Fill it too much and it will spill out of the breather when you floor the throttle.
If you find it is disappearing, then there is an o-ring inside the damper that requires replacement. This is a whole new task.
Can I recommend you buy a BL Repair Manual or Haynes Manual? These are available from the usual Triumph suppliers, or come up on eBay regularly.
